How come bolting on the east coast specifically Maryland is so taboo. It seems really ignorant. Everyone wants to leave no trace but climbing has an impact so just get over and bolt some rappel anchors. Anyone else run into this?

No, there's freakin bolts everywhere here, so I'm not sure what you are refering to. Unless your talking about bolting in a Trad area. But that's a whole other troll...

Sorry I was to general. I'm in Maryland. Around here it's taboo to bolt anything. I've been down to Seneca and out west. Every time I come back here it seems silly there are no bolts anywhere.

blueeyedclimber wrote: There's climbing in Maryland? Such as it is, yeah. OP, MD has a long traditional and toprope ethic, which is why you don't see much sport climbing there. People call NC the trad bastion of the east, but lil' ol' MD with its almost complete lack of sport routes has quietly held that title for pretty much ever. Of course on the other hand, MD also has a fraction of the rock NC has. As for anchor bolts, I agree with you. For various reasons, I'd also like to see this practice picked up in a few MD spots. Not Carderock and Great Falls, though. Top anchors at either of those would be a disaster, IMO. The body count would skyrocket.

There's very little sport climbing on the east coast other than Rumney because people like to pretend they're hardcore with their little cliffs. With that said though, it's also nice that every little pebble isn't bolted the way it is in some places out west. I'd rather over regulation than under regulation in the bolting realm. Oh, and MD has a few small craigs.....but you're best off heading to the Gunks or VA for anything decent.

I think I fixed your quoting appropriately. I don't typically head there. The narrows have some decent lines, but I generally go to WV if I am going to drive that far from pittsburgh. (You can take this to mean that the narrows are still far from a world class destination.)

actually, my favorite area in Maryland has been the local choss piles that I know of close to my parent's place. Annapolis Rocks was really stellar rock, but it was a long hike for single pitch climbing.

oh, actually you could be thinking of Harper's Ferry. I hear that place is hard to get to and chossy. I also understand there is climbing in VA and MD at Harper's Ferry.
