I'm heading down to JT this thanksgiving to do some hiking with some friends and I'm thinking of doing some top rope climbing as well. However, I only know how to setup top rope anchors with trees, rocks and bolts so I don't have any passive pro gears. From reading other threads on here and at joshuatreeclimb.com, it seems that most of the routes require you to have passive pro even for top ropes. My question is: would I be able to get away with just lots of slings/webbings to setup toprope at JT? If so, any recommendation on where to go? Thanks!

you can find bolts in some spots, but not many. BUT you can usually find large boulders to sling (dont use joshua trees). bring 2 50 foot webbings for boulders and you will find stuff to tr, no problem. look here for free pdfs of toprope areas. http://joshuatreeclimb.com/TopRopes/topropes.htm
