Hi Guys, Just wondered, how many of you got into climbing by going on a course with a guide. Or did you join a club. Out of the 2 which would you choose. innpinn

As long as money isnt much of an issue and your selective about who you hire, I would suggest a guide. I think you will learn far more about how to safely go about climbing on your own and will have a better time. If you join a club, odds are you will just endup an accomplice in a gang rape of some poor top rope wall. The only advantage I can see to a club is that they are free and a possible pool for partners once you know what you doing.

My first time "real" climbing was on a guided trip throught he science museum here. My mom thought it would be a cool thing for me to do. I'm glad she did It was a group thing, so there wasn't a hell of a lot of specific training going on. Seemed more like a thing for people to do it so they can say they did. It opened the door for me though and that's all I needed. --Andy P

Join a club, but take one of the classes that the club offers. I took a basic mountaineering class, and met some climbers (the instructors) who took me out and taught me more advanced stuff, and it also gives you people to climb with.

Remember when people used to go out and figure things out on their own? I don't, but it used to be that way. Get some books, do some reading, find a gym, find a group and tag along. Find a guide and refine skills learned in the previous step. Or reverse the steps and repeat every so often.

I went to the local climbing gym and they started me on a structured program of withdrawing money from my checking account every month. The approach worked and I learned to climb...
