maybe... we typically carry our weight lower than men, are shorter in height, and not as strong. dont get me wrong, there are a lot of kick-ass girl climbers, but it is truely a male-dominated sport.

Because hey, if a girl climbed laps around you and you are feeling inferior, at least you can feel superior knowing that your gender is the stronger of the 2

i hate to say it, but i don't think a woman would be the "best" in the world. only because of statistics. there are A LOT more men climbing than women, so men have a better chance at being "the best".
but in my experience, women have a better style most times. they look more fluid and natural with their movements.

how would you measure it? What does "the best mean" we would just end up arguing about semantics. there is no such thing as the best. the gold medalist of any sport from the olympics might not have won if the competition was 2 days or 10 minutes earlier or later or if they had eaten a different breakfast. best is simply Who won today's competition, and even that is arguable. The position of #1 is a undefinable, nebulous, thing. It reminds of bit of the theory of relativity. The closer you get to trying to define it, the less it seems definable. S

interesting thread. Lyn Hill was THE BEST rock climber in the world in 1993 (methinks) because she freed every pitch of the Nose. Did she stay at the top forever? No but she was the first PERSON to do it. It has been done since, but for a while she was at the top.
Will a female ever be at the top of 'sport' climbing? Sure, some uber strong chic could come along and just dominate sport climbing for a time. I don't think that any one climber would stay at the top for real long cuz there are so many folks that are improving all the time and making advancements and pushing the envelope and let's face it; climbers get injured, burnt out, die, pregnant, retire, whatever and these facts of life open up oportunity for others to be 'King or Queen of the Hill' at least for a short time.

... so, when Klem, Dai, Chris, Dave et al. get pregnant then the likelihood will increase somewhat

Good luck - I'll be interested to see what your criteria are.
If the best climber is the one who's having the most fun then yes, often :-)
Cheers Adam
I agree with Clay here...
Our sport is not about pushing to the top and being the best blah blah blah bullshit (unless you are jt512) It is about ourselves and truely doing something we enjoy.
Look at some petzl sport comps. Arguably the best bolt clippers in the world, and at some of the events, they don't even keep score. They are there to teach people and support each other on sends. Granted the teaching for some might be a product of there sponsers back pocket, but whatever.
Climb to climb, women kick my ass at the gym almost everytime I am there, I just wish I had a girl that could do the same, on the rocks that is...

Dani Andrada??
9b 1 9a+ 5 9a 9
I heard in the early '00's, he had done over a thousand grade 8's...
So, as far as sport climbing goes, Dani pretty much rules.
RJ
Wait, I didn't even know there were that many solid 9a+'s out there....
I believe three of those 9a+ routes are actually variations of the same route. The 9b is actually the sit start to the extension of those routes.
While I agree that Dani is strong, and a great climber, it kinda says something when you have different variations of the same route listed on your tick list 5 times. Just off the top of my head he has Ali-baba, Ali-hulk which is an extension of ali-baba, ali-hulk extension which is an extension of Ali-hulk, then the sit start to the Ali-Hulk extension. Does anybody else think that perhaps he's beat that route to a bloody pulp and should start focusing elsewhere?

heh heh, there ya go RJ, for every climber that can be nominated as "the best" there will be plenty willing to say they are not with evidence...
The word "best" in our sport may as well not exist... there is no concrete best (climber, route, style, discipline) except individual opinion... all else is dust in the wind dude.

sed 'said' it best!!!! Read his post again.
Only men are paranoid, er, preoccupied with this question anyway since their intrinsic identities are apparently threatened by this notion. I have never once seen or heard a woman ask, "So has a woman become/will a woman become the best [sport/blah whatever] climber in the world?"

Well, being women, they already know it's hopeless.

Yea, too many are pre-occupied with whether they look pretty while they are climbing to worry about being the best.
I know I will never be the "best" in terms of grades so who the heck cares.

I agree that they are great climbers. As a sport climber, can they climb 5.15? My definition of "best" is hardest, consistent sport climber. Think Dave Grahm, Chris Sharma. I am not looking to prove my opinion one way or another and I think it is funny how people get so defensive when I didn't even vote yet!
