Anybody know anything about the Vulcan's Bellwood Quarry outside Atlanta? Apparently the City of Atlanta purchased the land over a year ago with long term plans to incorporate it into the Beltline project as park. It was rumored that rock climbing might be one of the permissible activities.
Anyone know if that's still the case? Anyone ever make a trip out there to check out the quarry firsthand?

So any info about the quarry. I know its part of the atlanta beltline, But I have not heard anything.

The Beltline is still a ways away, which makes me think that access is way off. Also, I think that they were going to fill it to make a a big lake. The good news is that the Boulevard Station of the Beltline(east of the Quarry) has a completion date of 2010. Then the whole park system will start to change.

I live next to it and have explored the area a few times (large gap under the fence-- was just too tempting). I haven't seen a single wall that isn't completely chossed up-- nothing looked like it would be much fun to climb, at least viewing from the top. There are some large boulders in the bottom that might be fun.

Hello Atlanta Climbers: I am Ben Jacob, the City's project engineer for the conversion of the Bellwood Quarry to a drinking water reservoir. Please understand that this quarry is NOT safe to play in. We have random rock falls off the blast-fractured walls on a near daily basis--this is NOT going to be a good destination for rock climbing. Please do not exercise your curiosity or encourage others to trespass onto the property. Our goal is to convert this quarry into a huge drinking water reservoir--we are in the planning/design phase for this. The entire property is restricted due to safety hazards lurking around every corner; even in the long term we acknowledge the quarry and reservoir itself will continue to be restricted. The property is patrolled and we have been instructed to aggressively prosecute trespassers. In an effort to allow the public to LEGALLY AND SAFELY view the property, the Beltline offers FREE tours that stop at the quarry where you can take an upclose look from the view point (Beltline.org). If all else fails to satisfy your curiosity, call me at 404-420-1374 before you contemplate trespass. I have climbed a little in my life and I am sympathetic to the cause, however I sincerely state this is not a safe place to play.

Well that seems like a very straight forward answer. I like that they are giving tours and Mr. Jacob is even willing to chat with you about the project. How often do you get someone working for a government entity that is willing to give you his phone number.
