A group of us, maybe as many as 5 will be going up to climb the Gunks April 30-May 3. I've heard of camping at Tuthilltown distillery. Any other good places to camp or crash for the night on the cheap?

You can crash at the multiple-use area (DEC) for free. It's easy, close, and convenient. Or check out http://www.gunks.com

For a more civilized approach, go to the New Paltz hostel on main street. for ~$30 a night you get a bed, linens and access to the kitchen. It's clean, warm and a great place to stay.

I wont repeat much of what was said already, but the MAU (multy abuse area) or Camp Slime are both free options. If you camp at the MAU, or MUA, its official name, steer clear of sights marked with no camping signs. They do ticket people for setting up tents in the no camping areas.

The word is that "camping at the Gristmill (Tuthilltown distillery) is closed until further notice. The Gristmill is extremely busy with the distillery business and will not be able to offer camping until further notice. Ralph indicates he may try to allow camping beginning in August. His website is being rebuilt and doesn't yet have a camping for climbers page. He will have one added soon and you can check there for updates. "
