I've been coming to Nicaragua for years now looking for and inquiring about climbing spots and nobody knows anything. On youtube, there's a video of someome climbing a beach cliff. There's no indication on the video of where it is but it looks like San Juan. Otherwise, I've had trouble finding anything on the subject but hope to keep exploring the country. Keep in mind that much of Nicaragua's autonomous Eastern half has yet to even be explored so there may very well be some hidden gems in there.

I'll be headed down to nicaragua soon-ish. Does rockclimbing exist much there? I'm just wondering if I should even bother to pack climbing shoes etc.etc

Hello all.
There is hope for those looking for rocks in Nicaragua. There are several areas that have LOTS of potential, but are rather undeveloped, a bit dirty, and an adventure to get to. Here are a few:
-Somoto Canyon outside of the city of somoto has huge potential. Sheer cliffs, little cleaning needed, and a nice deep river at the bottom of the canyon. Ive seen some Nicaraguans repelling, so there are some anchors of some sort at the top. Anyone heading to Nicaragua with a BOLT GUN, PLEASE WRITE ME, we can set up some routes!
-the MATAGALPA region also has a lot of big rocks. Just outside the city there is a 40m sheer cliff, little cleaning needed, but very little in the anchor department on the top. There is also a massive crag in the town of Quirragua that I havent been able to explore yet. There are multiple bouldering areas as well in the city of Matagalpa, some of which need some serious cleaning though with machete and wire brush.
There is potential here! Any climbers heading to Nicaragua, especially Matagalpa, I'd be interested in opening some new routes, and getting into some adventures. Please write labuenaonda.matagalpa@gmail.com and see the website hostelmatagalpa.com

I have heard that Bob D'Antonio is 'a good guy to talk to' regarding climbing in nicaragua, but I never followed up on that. You can find him on supertopo.com, I think he posts as Bob D there.

Just thought I'd throw it in that San Juan del Sur, according to my opinion, has next to no potential. The rock kinda crumbles and falls down just by looking at it. I had a scary scramble up the hill to get to the upper part of it, just touching it some big chunks came off. Same think with the cliffs down by the sea further out on the point.

Hey just thought I would throw my two cents in...if anybody is still checking this forum. There is a SICK bouldering problem on the beach next to Majagual. Starts in a cave to a high mantle.
For anybody interested, I will be building the first climbing tower in San Juan del Sur (possibly all of Nicaragua) Should be up in a couple months. Also will be scouting out potentials. Heard there was some rock up by Tola.

Good news - after years of searching for solid rock around Matagalpa, we decided to head to the Somoto Canyon instead. Apart from being stunningly beautiful, the Canyon has almost endless sport potential, a few trad lines, and we managed to put up a few top rope ascents on a pretty classic crack. Solid rock, great swimming, lots of bouldering, some great Deep Water Soloing as well, great camping.
We took some local guides with us who are into rappelling, and are in discussions with them about how to develop the area. We are in the process of getting some gear down here for them, and getting them some further training. We are based out of La Buena Onda in Matagalpa (www.hostelmatagalpa.com) so contact us if you would be interested in helping us to develop the area.
We want to get the access worked out first with the parks department, and then set up some kind of school with the local guides so that they can maintain the area, or else we'll just have a bunch of scattered rusty bolts in a few years. Any bolting help/advice or how to deal with Latin American access issues would be MUCH appreciated!

We are extremely interested in helping to develop/promote climbing in Nica. I've been eyeing Somoto ever since my parents came back from a trip there a few years ago!!! My family is from Diriamba/La Boquita area and we plan on scouring the area for rocks to develop....We have been actively bolting here in northern Mexico during the winters and McCall, ID in the summers.... I had planned on coming down with drill, bolts ect but had no idea anyone had started developing there. How is it coming with the access issues/parks department?? What's the rock like?? I heard it is granite but looks like limestone in the photos?? Any info woud be greatly appreciated to help maximize our time down there and hopefully get some quality routes up!!

i used to rock climb in colombia , now i live and work here , i ´ve been looking around places to climb , and i´ve found some really nice rocks , and really close to the capital , in juigalpa at 100 km far away from managua , also in matagalpa some boulder and rock climbing potential , and somoto canyon, i ´ve found places but i´ve not found people to climb , so if you are interested write me and i ´ll send you the picture of the places.

Hi all, I am going to be in Nicaragua from roughly Aug. 18 to Aug. 30 and, as of yet, I have planned literally nothing of my vacation :) I would love to get some sort of climbing or bouldering in during my trip if at all possible. Sounds like the folks on this thread are THE people to talk to. Any updates on any of this talk of developing routes? Anybody wanna partner up for some routes or go out bouldering together during the dates I'll be traveling?

I live on Ometepe half the year and last year when i visited Somoto Canyon the guide said there were some sport routs that were established there.

Hi everyone,
I'm currently in Nicaragua for 3 months. I'm staying in Nueva Guinea where I had hoped te find some good boulder spots, but so far no succes..
I brought my basic climbing gear with me: belt, shoes, chalk, but where I live now there are no good rocks (so far).
So now I'd like to go to a better place to climb, and from what I read Somoto is the place to be in Nicaragua for climbing.
So I'm definitely interested in going climbing there with some other people!!
I have free time from the 23-31of March and I'd like to make a trip to Somoto than. Anyone interested in going together? --> let me Know!

Hello , im really happy to read that the treatd hasnt dead yet. Im actually living in managua , i've being living 3 years now.
I actually know that there is guy in somoto that is making basic climbing. Only tope rope and only a couple of routs.
There isnt anything bolted yet , but it would be really really interesting if we can organize and bolt some routes. I work as a photographer so i ve a lot of free time so we can organize a discovery trip.
I climbed for 2 and a half years before moving to managua , so i hace my climbing shoes and some chalk , no harness.

There at somoto canyon is a site with a lot of potential , for all climbing styles , psicobloc etc. Add me . I'll be waiting  |
