Looking for a climbers map of the Ruth Gorge/amphitheater. Something that shows peaks, faces, and ridgelines and has the named features labeled. I have the USGS maps for the area, but it only labels the major peaks. I'm not looking for route topos or locations, just peak names and features (the Gargoyle for example). Any one?

Not sure that any has been made commercially but you could always call the Talkeetna ranger station. They have a pretty good achive of materials and references. They probably have a map labelled like that but you might have to go there to use it :)

If you're an AAC member, you might try calling their library. They might have something as well. Their number is on their website.

We'll certainly check out route info when we get to Talkeetna, and I have the National Geographic map for Denali, which shows the area is a 200ft countour interval. So yeah all I really need is some names. Myabe I'll just spend some time at the Ranger Station and copy them on to the map I have. I'm goin gover a friends house this week. He has every AAC yearly journal from 1967 on.

There's a Mount McKinley map that you can order from any major mapshop or online. It includes the Ruth.

It may not answer all your prayers.....but there was a damn good spread on Ruth in a back issue of The Alpinist. The routes illustrated used aerials as the background. Very well done. Be sure and get this in addition to whatever else is recommended. I'm not sure which issue. You'll have to call them. I'll guess at least a year back

I actually found what I was looking for in the 2006 AAJ. The USGS maps of the area only label the major peaks, and the Alpinist issue profiled the Moose's Tooth, but didn't have a good climbers map of the whole gorge. The AAJ had a nice spread written by Joe Puryear and had a map of the Ruth Gorge with all the features labeled. SWEET! Now you guys keep debating the merits of different kinds of ice tools and backpacks...I'm gonna go use mine.
