Oh, Don't that make you want to go buy a Pathfinder. How did they know it is the Climbers Perferred Vehicle? How much cash you think Hillary got for that one? JBone

Hey Jbone, Not sure what you're talking about. Being a pathfinder driving chick (since before the term SUV was coined, I might add), I'm intrigued. Another marketing ploy? Does it mean that if I upgrade my '88 to a new Everest edition, I'll be a better climber? Hummmm... where do I sign? (and can you loan me the money) -kelly

So when you drive these things across glaciers, do you have to rope several of them together? Imagine the ice axe you would have to hook the winch to when it falls in a cravase!

I think the key question is how much will the price of the 4Runner increase due to the extravagant expense of their new marketing campaign? I'd also like to know what percentage of those vehicles actually end up going off road, versus just driving some rich suburban kids to soccer practice and making trips to the grocery store. Probably 95% to the latter.

Toyota is sponsoring the Everest Extremes series on OLN. The tag line is "4Runners of adventure." So you see, it is a mutipromged advertising attack. And I am sure someone will buy one of these things just because of the show. OLN also has a Survivor-type show called "No Boundaries" sponsored by Ford with lots of logo placement and auto-eye candy. And The North Face has a Chevy Avalance edition. Does anyone see a trend? [ This Message was edited by: toprope_media on 2002-10-29 06:25 ]

Speaking of driving on glaciers... A company, in Greenland I believe, called Artic Trucks customizes SUVs for glacier and extreme backcountry travel. They have a ladder-like extension that goes on the front of the truck to prevent it from dropping into crevasses. They specialize in Toyota Land Cruisers.

Hey, let's not get down on the poser SUV drivers. With their high rollover capacity, poor stopping distance and driver ignorance and overconfidence about 4WD and braking, driving an SUV is far more dangerous than climbing. Something like 12,000 people have died in SUV rollovers in the last decade. Now that's eXtreme!!! [ This Message was edited by: bradhill on 2002-10-30 08:09 ]

Except that I drive a compact car. And I like to breathe clean air. And I like to be able to see the mountains instead of a cloud of smog. And I don't like oil-money funded terrorists attacking my country and despots oppressing their people and destabilizing the world. And I like Alaska as a pristine wilderness. And I'd like there to be some glaciers left for my children and grandchildren to enjoy climbing on. So, no, it's not OK by me to use climbing as a way to sell these destructive and selfish behemoths.

Two things. 1) I can't believe Hillary doesn't look much older. It was 1953. They guy has GOT to at least be in his 80s. 2) Stupid commercial.
