Hi. I am new to this site and to NC. I am starting my PhD at Duke in July and am trying to find some good climbing that is not inside on a rock wall. I am coming from central New Mexico, so currently I am rather spoiled. I have heard that North Cary Park is pretty good, but does anyone know other spots, particularly for bouldering within 30 minutes or so of Duke. Also, if anyone is looking for a partner for top roping or bouldering let me know. Thanks!

There is not much that is very local. You have a wall at Duke and there are a couple gyms in the area. Winter bouldering at Asheboro is about the closest good rock, and about an hour from Duke. Bouldering and routes near Winston Salem are a little less than two hours away. I'm afraid you won't find any good real rock within a half-hour of Durham.

You can make some real good problems at the North Cary Park. If you're going to be at NCP you might as well check out the Triangle Rock Club in Morrisville. http://www.trianglerockclub.com I know you asked for places that are not indoor climbing walls but this is worth checking out. There is a lifetime of climbing in North Carolina. If you'll be in the area for a long time, join the Carolina Climbers Coalition to gain entry in the Ashboro Boulders. Ashboro may be a wee bit hot in the summer though.

Thanks for the info. I also heard that there is a gym called Vertical Edge in Durham. Does anyone have an opinion on it? I will be spending at least 3-4 years in the area, so lots of time to explore climbing both inside and outside.
