Hi Everyone! I had a quick question. When you set an anchor and you tie your figure 8 or overhand knot after equalizing the 3 anchor points.. right above the knot where the webbing all intersects, there is a name for that point right above the knot. Anyone know what that's called. Thanks

The shelf? You make sure that you clip your biner into each loop connected to the anchor points.

More importantly, why does this point right above the knot where the webbing intersects have a name at all?

OK, if you Google "Define: Stratum" you get all sorts of definitions pertaining to geological layering, a dutch villiage, and an economic status of people. There is no reference to climbing anchors. I believe you are thinking of the shelf. It has a name so that way when people ask where a dumb place to clip into the anchor is at you can simply refer them to "the shelf".

Not to get drawn into a retard argument, but hell, I'm bored, and pretty much retarded anyway... By this same logic if you lookup "shelf" at dictionary.com you see various definitions from things you buy at Ikea to rock ledges, plateaus, mountains and whatnot. But at no point does it refer to an anchor of any sort. I believe what you are referring to is a Stratum.

It's really only considered the shelf if you're clipping the top shelf. That's the best place to clip. The bottom shelf is too easily accessible and you certainly don't need a helmet to clip that one. Only n00bs clip the bottom shelf.
