I've pulled and my share of 1/4" by 1" button heads in the black hills (SD) and put real bolts back in. LOL

It is true that the reasons some lead are the same reasons some don't.

A great man was once was asked "why do you climb the mountain" He said "Because it's there"

The last time I asked my self "Why the hell do I climb?" It was when I reached my belay only to find a single 1/4" button head with a home made hanger. Next to it was an empty hole. What happened to the other bolt I wonder? It scares me to think.

I have removed 1/4" button heads in J-Tree and WY also. Some people just should not put up new climbs. Plain and simple.

Quiet dangerous? Is that like Death in the Tall Grass?

Someone said "hey, you should do this." So I did, until I fell.

'cause that's climbing.

Besides, you don't want to deal with rope always getting in your way, do you?

I started leading because of two things:

1. Most of the climbs I wanted to do couldn't be top roped and I didn't know any other climbers.

2. From the start climbing for me has in some measure about the acquisition of an ever-expanding set skills. I dig the whole experience from pebble pulling to suffering on the sides of mountains. Skiing, glacier travel, snow climbing, ice climbing, winter camping skills, winter mountaineering skills, free climbing, aid climbing, walls, short hard trad, long moderate trad, long hard trad, back country any of the above, sport climbing, bouldering, hiking, peak bagging.... leading is a big part of all them.

Cheers

I wanted to be the best of the best of the best. Besides how was I going to get into a climbing gang if I couldnt lead. I wanted respect from the other climbing gangs. In a world of war between sport and trad. I wanted to be a quikdraw killa. So I started leading and earned the respect I deserved. Gang wars thats why I joined. yup......

Cuz I wanted to pick up the crag bunnies and they think that top roping is teh lame. Plus the rope ruins the view of my amazing muscles as I'm pulling down hard.

boulderd for a really long time. loved it, but got a little bored with it. I learned a lot as far as technique goes and definitely got my weight training up...but then I got ambitious and wanted to do all those cool bouldering moves...but....40 feet in the air. Top roping is dumb...so....sport climbing it is!

trad is coming up next :D too bad that's super expensive...

Because I wanted to play with all those cool bits and pieces that all the ballers have. They just look so cool.

Actually it was largely because the local crag had lots of 5.10s (mostly b's and c's) but then kind of jumped in to 5.12s with almost nothing in between. Since I could climb all the 10s but none of the 12s, it made sense to make the 10s harder than flail at the 12s. The problem for me was that I was the most experienced climber in my circle, so finding anyone to even learn with was hard, and learning from someone was totally out of the picture. Mock-leading on a TR-solo setup was how I finally started practicing lead and meeting more experienced climbers.
