That sucks, I just started reading Alpinist, Their special issue highlighting El Cap in 25 was awsome, I was looking forward to future issues.

I was just looking through one of my back issues last night; I subscribed for their first three years, and was thinking about how I should resubscribe.

FEck! I just subscribed a month or two ago! (so what happens to the rest of my subscription?) Got issue 25 in the mail about two weeks ago, but haven't gotten the chance to read it (damn schoolwork).
This sucks, I hope they're able to survive! Alpinist is a great mag...

i dont know alpinist, so i cant really say if it could be a replacement, but the french magazine vertical is really nice. also printed in a german, an italian and an english version. http://www.vertical-magazine.com
When it first came out in german, i was totally amazed.
Of course they do have advertisements and stuff, but really great articles. Not about the new, hip 5.16 sports mekka, but pieces about historic, alpine routes, portraits about climbers and such, and alway one area as the focus of the issue. (and of course a always a bit of sport and bouldering, but not much).
However i dont know how to get it in the US, and its focusd on europe.
But maybe that could be a suggestion for some.
It is so hard to find a decent magazine. I dont mind a few ads, and the occasional beginners guide, or report about climbing competitions, but if it becomes the main thing ....
but sadly thats what most people want? is that urban climber cover really real?

As long as America's climbing population is predominately made up of shirtless, self-promoting, beanie-wearing, slackline walking, product-loyal gymbies who move in great media-directed herds from one "destination area" to another, who spend more on coffee than they do on gear and who write checks to avoid actually preserving the crags by getting their hands dirty (or protesting and getting arrested), class acts like Alpinist are doomed to failure.
Who wants to know what the hardest climbers of Europe are sending when we could be reading more articles about how (insert famous young climber's name) is (insert activity completely peripheral to climbing but rather hip like meditating, painting, or playing flute) before shredding (insert uber-cool name of climb consisting of 30 or more brutal moves that don't get you ten yards off the deck, requiring superhuman obsession and tendon strength, and almost guaranteeing eventual arthritis, bursitis, and tendonitis)?
Don't you want to spend your rain/rest days reading about some young staff slacker at one of the rags getting to hang out with his coolest heroes in some bar, with nary a word of climbing tween intro and finis? Or hear about how great someplace off in the middle of Fumbuk is for all the people who can afford the $7,000 cost of going there to climb nothing but 5.12 and harder for a week?
Geez... you'd think you people had standards or something....
On a personal note, I'm gonna miss that mag. It was, in my opinion, the only climbing mag worth reading in a long time.

Not kidding, I thought that was what all magazines should aspire to - not product placement and frenetic attention-grabbing promotions, but real reportages.
Obviously, Maxim / Blender / whatever is the model that works.
What I found amusing - Alpinist shuts down, and "Deadpoint magazine" starts up.
A day in the life of the publishing industry...

That is true, Vertical is a decent mag, not on the same level as alpinist, but way better than urban climber and the others out there. Climbing is decent sometimes, but lately, it's been drifting to something closer to urban climber.

No doubt Alpinist was a great mag. However, the magazine industry is in fact a business and as far as business sense goes, not having advertisers to offset the exorbitant costs of printing is just plain stupid. With the publisher bank rolling the entire operation with private funding... it was doomed to fail.
