Any recommendations on a "light detergent" to wash a rope with? Manufacturer recommends a light detergent, but I've used shampoo in the past. Not sure what is the best/recommended household soap/detergent.

My personal opinion is that you should never use a DETERGENT to wash your rope, you should always use a natural soap to wash your rope or a purpose designed rope wash which there are many on the market.

Woolite is supposed to be an OK household product. No regular detergents though.

i have started to jut throw it in my washing machine without any detergent. the water alone does a lot to clean it up. i used to use those sterling rope wash packets, but i ran out. you can do 2 ropes at the same time with one of those packets. my method for rope washing:
1. run the washer once without anything in it to make sure that you clean out any lingering detergent
2. double your rope and daisy chain it
3. place rope in washer
4. hang it to dry

I agree with thabadcharacter. If you must use detergent, use Woolite, or anything bleach-free.

thx all, i got lazy and just put some shampoo and hand wash in the machine, rope in a large stuff sack and washed it. I've thrown it in loose in the past and it worked out, but safer in the loose bag. Just didn't know if there was a preferred household soap. Wanted to wash it today without ordering up some special soap. It worked out I guess.

I've been washing ropes for over 40 years... and if I have it use woolite otherwise a small amount of normal laundry detergent. I'll go along with the just plain water approach. The biggest concession I make to conservative rope handling is a laundry bag for the rope. It keeps things from getting pretty twisted ;)

I have yet to get any of my ropes cleaner with soap then without. Just throw it in the wash machine and be done with it. You don’t need to add soap. And if you take a look at the water after the washer starts spinning you will notice its pure black. Soap does not do much when the water you’re washing the rope in contains so much dirt you can’t see 6" into it.
