I'm moving to Bangkok for 6 months starting in February and I figured that one way to save some weight in my luggage would be to leave my old rope back home. I was curious if anyone (perhaps some locals) had any information on outdoor gear shops in Bangkok or Thailand in general and could possibly point me in the right direction. Do shops in Thailand carry the same gear that US shops do? Should I expect to pay more for a rope? less? Thanks.

Take your rope! I found only one store in Bk that had a couple of ropes and they were about double the price of what you will find in the states. Take everything you need for climbing....you will not regret it.

You can buy Sterling ropes in Chiang Mai.
Bangkok you can buy Camp ropes.
Maybe in Krabi young can buy ropes, but I am not too sure about that

You can UPS your gear to yourself…. You can also order gear online and have it shipped to Thailand…
A quick search found this eBay Blue Water dealer who ships to Thailand. A little more googling will certainly turn up more.

Current rate is 32.5 baht/dollar, so that's a 184 dollar rope. Not great, but not too bad and you save the 10 lbs and luggage space.

Unless you are shipping volume of x, suspected of being resold for profit or a vehicle there are is no legal tax…..Maybe your friend got screwed… you ship to your name at the sponsors address on your visa forms. You must have sponsors in Thailand to submit the application for the visa possess so you already have all that info. If it is a friend you use their id number and phone number in addition to your name, if you are staying at a resort of hotel ?, contact the establishment , and they will give you any information you need.
I spent 9 months in Asia over a 3 year period. It was easy to bribe officials , and I remember some airport tax when leaving Vietnam , but my friends told me they stopped that tax in 07... Do whatever works best for you. It is easy to ship UPS. Or buy it there…and if you will be there for a while , have a local friend buy you a motor bike…it is the best way to get around... I picked up a restored toy Honda for 200usd , if I went myself it would have been considerably more. That is why I think maybe your friend got bent over and @$%^ed in the a$$…

I guess I'm too late for the last posting! Anyhow, I just arrived in Bangkok and I'm looking for
- good climbing walls to practice in BKK
- material for rock climbing
- last but not least people to do rock climbing with, best in BKK on a regular basis. (once a week?)
Thanks for any hint, I'm looking forward to other rock climbers in BKK.

Hey Manny,
most of the time I did bouldering indoor (I had an excellent hall nearby back home) and outdoor rock climbing up to 6 UIAA.
I'm looking forward to anybody who wants to do rock climbing in Bangkok or maybe sometimes in excellent spots in Thailand (Krabi?).

Was in Railay (Krabi) a few weeks ago and shops there definitely do have the odd rope in stock. Don't remember exact prices but somewhere around $150-200 USD.
