(refers to Bon Echo, Ontario) I have a 60 m and a 50 m rope. Is that sufficient for the Birthday Ridge rap station? Thanks in advance!

When I've rapped with doubles there's always a ton of rope left over. And even if you can't make it all the way down, the bottom part is pretty easy to down climb.

You'll be fine. But i have another point. Has anybody else had the opinion the the more difficult routes at Bon Echo are kind of unpleasant? Awkward, holds sloping the wrong way, good holds in bad places, etc? I know I'm whining, but it always seems to me that the easy routes, like Birthday Ridge, are super enjoyable, and the harder routes are scary.

... Has anybody else had the opinion the the more difficult routes at Bon Echo are kind of unpleasant? Awkward, holds sloping the wrong way, good holds in bad places, etc? ... Unpleasant? Challenging? Whatever you want to call it. It's often not climber-friendly rock. Yes, many of the ledges do slope downwards (the opposite of the Gunks). And the pro can be scarce and scary. When the granite metamorphized, there were intrusions of quartz and schist into the cracks, leaving them very dubious as gear placements. Climbing at BE requires a lot of judgment. I see climbing at Bon Echo as having something of the character of climbing on alpine rock. But that said, I still love the place. It's beautiful. The swimming is fine. Oh yeah, the 50- and 60- metre ropes are fine. A 60 gets right to the bottom of the Birthday Ridge Slabs. A 50 means you have to downclimb about 30 feet of 4th-class slab.

I was just talking to someone who was up there, and about half the cliff is closed for the time being for peregrine falcon nesting. I think I'll put off any visits to later in the summer until after the chicks have left the nest.
