First a couple links to some 5dII video, don't think I have posted them yet...

and

http://2009.soulofathens.com/?q=node/48

I have been shooting a little bit of video, though I still fully suck at it. The 5dII IQ is crazy, esp at full resolution, I just haven't been great at capture yet, and my editing / exporting skilz are teh suck. At least right now, still working on it and learning.

Here is a link to my vimeo the two climbing vids look soft on there, but look fine in full res, think it was something to do with my export settings. The other are just OK, though there is a clip of some dancing shot with a 15mm fisheye at f.28 and ISO 6400 that show some of the potential.

Just picked up a 5d II last week! Haven't worked with the video yet, but there is a new firmware out next week that will allow full manual control for the video capture. So, will be able to shoot with super shallow DOF, high ISO, and varied shutter speeds! Should be pretty rad.

The still images are amazing and it handles pretty well for a non 1 series.

First, Fixed the URLS for you.

Second, If you want any help exporting, editing, or hosting I can help with that. What software are you currently using? Are you using a MAC computer?

Nice start with the videos by the way. The compression and hosting can be improved but the IQ looks pretty good.

Ha! I just recently convinced my wife that she needs one! It should be on our front porch first thing tomorrow morning! this is better than Christmas eve!

Edited to add that when her new 5D mark ii shows up, I get her XTi which is more than enough camera for me (I've also already inherited the small Panasonic point and shoot...)

hosh.

What a jerk, rubbing it in my face like that. I am having a hard time convincing my wife to let me get a new 50mm prime lens.

But in all seriousness, that rocks.

I just saw that nikon is upgrading the d300 to a d300s which has 720p video on it. Still not 1080p, but it does look like they are fixing some of the problems that the video on the d90 had. Since I shoot nikon, I may just need to start trying to convince my wife to let me get that.

Sorry, had to! We took it out of the box this morning, and we're very impressed with the quality of the images that we're getting around the house so far. Once the battery is able to charge again (we already killed the little charge that comes with it), we're going to head out for a walk in a meadow and see what kind of images we can steal from nature.

hosh.

Right now I am using iMovie08 for quick edits, since it does an OK job on downsizing the clips on import and is OK for export as well. Also have final cut express, but have to run the clips through mpegstreamclip to convert to apple intermediate codec first, but I need to go ahead and take the time to use and learn FCE more. Anyone have any good sources for more info on FCE - I see lots of Final Cut Pro stuff, but not much FCE stuff. Books or web or podcasts, etc.

Vimo does an ok job with the hosting, I am just working on what settings to use to get the best balance of IQ and file size. I have the space and bandwidth to self host, but like the interface for vimo.

And, once I get some footage worthy of the effort, want to add some CC music as well. Really going to try to avoid using copyrighted music, even for fun clips.

Video is quite a bit different in a few ways - it feels way more passive to capture coming from stills. More time in the setup and storyboarding, etc to get what you want captured, and less just run and gun like I do with a still camera. But, there are some things that still photos just can't fully tell the story of. So, will be really working on improving my skills with it. Hopefully, have some worthy stuff by end of fall...

After seeing your photos I have no doubt you will get some great videos as well. Can't wait to see your next videos.

Some more examples of what people are doing with the 5dII, from a post on fredmiranda.com. Some pretty cool, some kinda meh (but still cool technically). Some are wow!

Thanks for the heads up on those videos. The few I looked at were really good. However, I am not too excited about Vimeo’s compression on some clips. It appears to be worse than youtubes. However, I still haven’t seen the same unaltered clip on vimeo that is on youtube. Do you know of any examples like that? Could you produce one and upload it to both sites?

How much did your 5DMKII run you? How many lenses do you have for it? Also did you have to buy all new lenses for it? I really would love to get the 5DMKII but my budget won’t allow more than $1000 for camera and a lens.

I know that I can get a great used DSLR for less than $1K. However, I really need video as well. I doubt the 5DMKII will ever get under $1000 with a lens even on the used market in the distant future.

Wes, what do you think about this upcoming Panasonic micro 4/3s? It will shoot 720p video, but it does not have in body image stabilization. Do you think this camera would be a good compromise for image quality, size, bang for your buck, and versatility?

What do you think of the 4/3s format?

Panasonic GF1

1. It will be almost the exact same dimensions as the EP1. “E-P1 is 121mm (W) x 70mm (H) x 36mm (D), 119X71X36.3mm for the GF1.”

2. It will have a pop-up flash.

3. It does not have an EVF but it appears that an external one can be used.

4. It has a dedicated movie record button on the top right of the camera.

5. It has HDMI output.

6. It uses the AVCHD- Lite format which means 720p(1280x720) but we don’t know the frame rate.

7. It has a single mono microphone on the top of the camera.

8. It will have 20/1.7 and 45/2.8 macro lenses available. However, we don’t know if they will be bundled with the camera.

9. It has a hot shoe.

10. It has a widescreen LCD. [edit: probably the 3:2 LCD of the LX3]

11. It does not have in body image stabilization.

Can't really comment on vimo v. youtube, I just started with vimo on a recommendation from some people I know. A couple of the clips had a link to download the full 1080p versions though.

We already had all our canon lenses, and the 5dII was mostly as an upgrade to the 5d. Video is just sorta a bonus and something that I am playing with. So, I only had to spend ~$500 to start using it as a video camera, though I need to spend a bit more to do it right. Even then original 5d's still sell for around $1000 used, body only. Right now a 5dII setup to do video and just one good lens would probably be around 4-5k.

Everyone is starting to add video to at least some of their dslr's, so I would say that you might be able to pick up something that does both, with an ok kit lens in the $1000 range before too long. But, for me at least, while the dslr sensors are really nice, the real reason to jump through hoops to use a dslr for video, is for the amazing glass you can use.

I am sure there are others that can chime in about the 4/3 systems, etc - but I don't really follow much outside of canon, and a little bit of nikon when it comes up here or there.
