How far will you travel to go to an indoor gym

I guess this really breaks down into three questions.

1) Whats the maximum driving distance, where you would still become a full time member of a gym.

2) What is the maximum distance you drive for an occasional indoor day climb.

3) Lets say your local gym was 20 minutes away. Would you drive 20 mins further to go to a significantly nicer gym over a close low quality gym.

If you feel inclined give details, explain your answers. I'd love to hear exactly how you feel about this.

1) No more than a half hour

2) No more than a half hour

3) Absolutely not.

1) 30 min, up to an hour if it's a really nice gym.

2) 2 hours if the weather sucks @$$.

3) I've done it before, I'll do it again.

+1

The other day I drove a half hour to my local gym for the first time since last winter. The drive was almost as brutal as being in the climbing gym itself.

~30 min, so I guess it depends on driving conditions

2) What is the maximum distance you drive for an occasional day climb.
1-1.5 hrs

3) Would you drive 20 mins further to go to a significantly nicer gym over a close low quality gym.
Further than the above answers? Probably not.

to the people who would not likely to drive more than 1/2 an hour would you be the type of people who avoid gym memberships anyway or you would join a gym and just dont think its worth alot of effort?

let's see,
1) used to drive 40 minutes to gym that I was a member at, there was a gym 20 minutes away but didn't like the environment or the routes for training so the 40 minutes was worth it. Now live where a different gym is 10 minutes and not joined there , again poor routes but improving. Gym 45 minutes away and have a 10 punch there and closest touchstone gym is 2 hrs and have ten punches with them as well.

2) 2 hours or so for day trip to Sac and do it once a month or more in the winter. Also go to bay area 3.5 hours to climb at other touchstone gyms a few weekends a year. Down there for other events but the gyms are scheduled in and high on priority list.

3) done and done.

Have a gym membership, climb there about 3 times/week. It's 7 minutes away. On a regular basis commuting for more than 1/2 hour just gets to be a drag. I think I'd build myself a garage wall.

My kids drive about 1 hour (one way) once a week to train with a climbing team in another city. I'd go but the timing is inconvenient.

To me, gym climbing, and everything that comes with it, isn't really worth driving more than a half hour for.

1. 45 minutes if it's a "really nice" gym, like the one I go to once a week or so in the winter.

2. I'd probably go an an hour and fifteen minutes occasionally if a friend wanted to go to a gym nearer to him/her (I climb in the gunks primarily and have partners from NJ,NY,CT), or if I wanted to try a new place for variety.

3. yes, a new gym opened up near me that's much coser than the 45 minute one. I go to one one day a week, and the other one day a week. It keeps me in shape and it's nice having variety in routes and route setting styles that different places offer.

I'm not a winter person, I don't climb ice, so at least the gym let's me train and socialize when I can't get out on real rock.

oops, forgot to reply to the actual post.

1) 30-40 min
2) 1-1.5 hr
3) Probably not but it really depends on how shitty the gym is 20 min away

1) 30mi and 45 minutes to my current gym

2) 3.5 hrs miles don't matter

3) Possibly, depending on the differences. Definitely if the close gym didn't really have lead walls.

If you feel inclined give details, explain your answers. I'd love to hear exactly how you feel about this.

1)
If only game in town I might drive up to 30 mins, though cursing and swearing every time and frantically trying to come up with new options for training at home, also would not be there near as often, if that far away.

2)
An hour, partially influenced by quality of gyms. If local sucks I'm much more likely to travel to a higher quality gym on weekend etc.

Currently I already do this in fact my local Rocreation (aka "the gym we love to hate") is just so so with often an indifferent staff, weekends I travel an hour to get to Hangar 18 much bigger and better in every way (except they charge for water wtf).

3)
Hell yah, though I'd probably go to the crappy gym at least one day during the week to save time. I currently already do this in fact. Rockreation is small and overcrowed with all the bouldering gym rats having a slumber party in the boulder area. Hanagar 18 is much bigger and doesn't allow that sort of behavior. Rockreation routes are also rated about a grade lower than other gyms to inflate the in crowds ego or something I have no idea.

So yeh obviously I'm not thrilled about going to the closer crappy gym, but practical matters force me to sometimes vs spending 1-1.5 hr each way to get to the other.

see above.

this is actually my current situation. once a week, we carpool to the nicer gym for a more intense training session, but the rest of the time its the closer one for us.

i should note that i'm also somewhat spoiled and have an interesting geographic setup that dictates my climbing gym behavior- the closest gym to me is within 15-20 minutes, which is nice. the other gym is about 40, which isnt all that bad in the grand scheme of things, but considering Red Rock is also 40 minutes, if i'm going to drive that far, it might as well be for real rock most of the time!

i think, though, that in all honesty, your question isnt really specific enough- and you're going to get a really wide variety of answers. different parts of the country are going to answer differently- i would say that folks inclination to drive to a gym will be somewhat related to the distance they have to drive to real rock (and how often they can get on real rock)- folks who are, say, 4+ hours from good rock and can only go twice a month would be much more likely to be willing to drive more than an hour to a good gym if necessary (i know i would be), whereas folks like myself who live within an hour of good rock thats accessible nearly 50 weeks out of the year, are much less inclined to travel more than 20-30 minutes to a gym, if they would go at all!

Whoah, .. you must have a jet, then?

For your information : Belgium North-South is about 270km, Belgium East-West is about 200km (depending on where in belgium you're at). It might be a small country, but 30 minutes won't bring me anywhere near decent climbable rock.

The closest decent rocks I know of are 120km away (Beez), so okay, it won't be 2 hours, but it's too far away to go to after a days work.

My local IS 20 minutes away. There is another one about 30 min away, as chance would have it. I don't patronize either establishment. Ever.

If I am going to hurt myself climbing its going to be climbing, not wanking on plastic. While I have no inherent problem with wanking in general or even wanking on plastic, its not my cup of tea.

The climbing gym is not a productive environment for me. Gym climbing bears little resemblance to the real thing imo. While great for strength and certain technique training, I am so susceptible to overuse injuries I had to give it up.

Yeah Beez is one of the closest area from where I live as well although for me it is about 240k's. There's stuff a bit closer but nothing good. I'll usually keep driving when we pass Beez though, I'm not to keen on the climbing there. But I'm just not a big fan of the whole polished lime thing so that kind of means belgium is not high on my fav places to climb anyway. Love the beer and cities though (Gent, Antwerp, Brugge)
