Just saw this on ErockOnline:
In reply to: The American Consulate in Monterrey is warning United States citizens not to use the highway between Reynosa and Monterrey as well as the the highway between Nuevo Laredo and Monterrey. http://www.valleycentral.com/...story.aspx?id=427275 I'm wondering how much of this is real versus hype from the recent killing of the US Consul in Mexico...

The U.S. Consular service is taking the current siruation rather seriously and recommending the removal of all non-essential personnel (i.e. family memebers) from the border towns and Monterrey. Potrero Chico is still safe and I think the highway would be safe in late morning and afternoon hours but I would not drive it at night.

Do they mean the toll roads? Or the regular highway? Those toll roads seemed pretty safe, not much traffic and lots of federales.

I thought it was the federales you need to be affraid of. Just make sure to bring a few hundred in bribe money and drive a junker and you should be OK anywhere in Mexico.
