I started climbing last year, and have a climbing buddy that can lead up to 5.8 sport. I am looking for some places around the Portland area that are sport climbs, or top rope abilities without lead climbing. Can anyone help?

You're better off posting up on cascadeclimbers.com in general for this sort of question. By and large PDX has Rocky Butte, Broughtons, and Ozone outside. Note that being on top at Rocky Butte when it's even moist in the air, let alone it having rained recently, is an exceptionally dangerous and slippery affair - don't in any way underestimate how incredibly dangerous just being around the slippery, sloping edges setting up a TR can be there. It also often takes additional ropes to get back to various trees. Ozone and Broughtons aren't really TR venues. Again, post up on cc.com and you'll get a bunch of feedback.

broughton is the best climbing (in my opinion) for portland. lots of 5.8-5.9 sport, and even some cool multipitch stuff. for a day with no crowds in a cool shady locale check out waterboard in oregon city. theres also frenches dome, although its a bit of a drive. I think rocky butte is one of the worst crags ive been to. the rock is nearly perfect, but the hwy noise and trash are unbearable.

Add Carver Cliffs to that list but you have to sign up for the CCC membership, which happens to be open right now, so get in while you still can. Lots of bouldering as well if you are into that kinda thing

I'm in town from Western Mass for work and have the day time this coming Monday open and was hoping to find a person willing to take me on a small climbing tour. I've climbed both trad & sport, but can only lead on sport, comfortably at 5.9. If anyone's interested, I'll be your guide if you ever head out East to the Gunks, Western Mass or New Hampshire! Laura

Laura, unfortunately the weather has closed in on use of late and according to the forecast Monday is likely to be pretty wet. I would be happy to oblige if it turns out to be dry, otherwise your best bet would be to check out PRG or the Crux gyms. Are you going to be staying around town for a bit, or moving here? I used to climb at Crow Hill back in the day, but never managed to hit any of the places around Amherst or points west of there. Joseph
