I extract these number from an article written by Washingtonpost (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A55871-2002Dec14.html). Given all of the commerical advertising about the outdoor adventures I was suprised by these numbers. "...Rafting? Down 18 percent. Overnight hiking and backpacking? Down 12 percent. Day hiking down percent. There were a few bright spots. While canoeing fell 12 percent, kayaking increased 35 percent. "There's something very appealing about the symmetry of kayaking, where you use the double paddles," speculates ASD president Harvey Lauer. And while mountain and rock climbing dropped 9 percent, indoor wall climbing grew 57 percent..."

I found a quote from a climbing web site that I think applies here. "There are 3 kinds of lies: Lies Damned Lies and Statistics" -Mark Twain How the hell does Washington Post know how many people are doing what.

The same way they take any poll... they call up and ask people. Statistically, they can take the sample size and demographic and tell you what their margin of error is, prolly about + or - 4. Does everything involving opinion polling fascinate you equally as well ? Do you sit there watchin election coverage and freakin out because they KNOW THE WINNERS before all the votes are counted ?!?!?

Easy there! Read the article, it might answer your question. I don't know whether the number is right or wrong, but the data came from American Sports Data (ASD), a New York research firm.

Those numbers are skewed! On the day they were calling, we were all out climbing. They could only reach the couch potatos. .....THEREFORE, the only ACURATE statistic that can be derived from random polls is..... Of the number of people called, how many were available to answer the phone.

Hmmm...I never got the call. Probably because I was out hiking and climbing. Or maybe they didn't have my number because I switched to a cell, so my family could keep track of me as I bounce state to state. Stupid polls, probably a ploy by timber wacking Republicans to decommision a few Nat'l Monuments.

Dudes... chill. They are not losing YOU from the statistics if you ARE hardcore climbers. You'd fall under the percentage of peeps who continue to rock and mountain climb, not the 9% who dropped out this year. Polling is certainly not going to represent every single individual, but it could give you an idea as to what social trends are going on. And now, apparently, LESS PEOPLE overall are rock and mountain climbing. They didn't say "9% less DIRTBAG climbers are climbing..." they said 9% less people. If anything we are losing the posers... which is a good thing, which is what I said in the first place. You guys just like disagreeing with me to see what I'll do, right ?!?!

Actually that quote about statistics was originally penned by British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraili...in case you were going to cite it or something.

Here is a statistic: Of all the people who get cancer in America 96% (+ or - 4%)have consumed bread at some point in their lives. We have found the culprit. Scarry

Figures don't lie, but liars can figure. I don't really doubt the figures though. Keep in mind that this past summer we had a terrible drought and many more forest fires than normal. I know I didn't backpack nearly as much as I normally do.

Headcrack, go ahead and defend the survey if you want, but it is blatantly different from what I observe outside on the rock. Seeing how you're from Texas, maybe you are seeing less people at the crags, but the places I've been are all getting more crowded, not less....

Hmmmm... on one hand we have a survey which attempts to give a cross section of the population as a whole... and on theother hand we have some Utard's anecdotal evidence... HHHHhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... Even if the amount of people going climbing outdoors is up in your particular zone, the survey probably tries to represent a societal trend or at the very least, a localized trend for an area other than the one in which you live. Just because your objective experience is different from what a survey like this suggests, doesn't mean that the poll is wrong. And lest you think I fully believe whatever the latest polls say, I know that the poll can be maipulated and sometimes aren't very well administered, which might be the case in this instance. Either way your last post was really kinda cute...

A lot of people do only gym climbing and never get outdoors, which isn't bad either cause they keep all that chalk away from the nice boulders in the middle of nowhere. But hey, if they're having fun climbing indoors, at least that'll be more people thinking climbers are complete psychos.
