You have the power to help supercharge the Access Fund’s land acquisition efforts, helping to save threatened climbing areas from development and closure! Visit http://www.accessfund.org/action to write your US Representatives and Senators today and ask them to support the Land & Water Conservation Fund. In 1965, Congress created the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). The idea behind LWCF is simple – invest some of the wealth from offshore drilling into conservation and recreation. Although the plan was for Congress to put $900 million of this reinvested money in the LWCF every year (a fraction of the billions of dollars collected from energy companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico), the LWCF has not received full funding each year. In light of the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Congress is now looking to fully and automatically fund the LWCF at $900 million each year. Despite being chronically underfunded, the LWCF has still been the most effective funding mechanism available to Congress to expand and improve opportunities for human-powered outdoor pursuits like climbing. The LWCF not only helps enhance National Parks, Forests, Trails and Wild and Scenic Rivers, but also helps establish close-to-home open space, parks, and recreation facilities in every U.S. state. Altogether, more than 40,000 projects have been successfully completed through the fund, providing new and improved outdoor recreation opportunities for all Americans. Imagine what we can accomplish with full funding. No other federal initiative has the ability to supercharge the Access Fund’s land acquisition efforts like the LWCF. With our new Access Fund Land Conservation Campaign, we are uniquely positioned to leverage these federal funds to protect climbing lands on a much bigger scale than ever before. A full and permanently funded LWCF means that there will be more resources available to protect the outdoor places we love and the access points we need to enjoy them. Please take a moment and visit the Access Fund website and send a letter using our advocacy tool, urging your US Representatives and Senators to support full funding of the Land & Water Conservation Fund! http://www.accessfund.org/action
