Okay, before this thread gets shifted to the community or zoo forums, I simply have to ask this here at the risk of sounding a bit silly (I'm not monkeying around). I was reading the thread about the height of climbers, and got to thinking that monkeys which are great tree climbers are actually quite short (<-- profound statement of the day). I wonder if anyone has seen monkeys climb rock or monkeys that were trained to climb rock (i.e., for show)? Would be fun to see a 4 foot tall chimpanzee scale El Capitan.

There's lots of squirrel rock climbers at the smoke bluffs in Squamish. They run around on vertical rock making it look so easy, mocking climbers. Little ba$tards.

Yeah they do climb rock trust me. I was in South Africa back in 99 at a crag called the silvermine. I was about 30 feet up when my partner shouted out from the ground. A bunch of babboons (I believe) were approaching him. One big muther then scrambled up the rocks across from me munching on some brunch eyeing me up. I was crapping myself as these are not always the most friendly of animals. I just carried on climbing keeping him sight out of the corner of my eye and he continued to watch me with some curiosity. In the end he got up, scrambled back down and joined the rest of his groub. Do monkeys climb? YES is the answer. Can they climb 5.14. I don't think so!

There is a great story by a well-known climber witnessing a monkey do some outrageous dyno. The story is quite funny and was printed in one of the climbing mags a few years back. Does anyone remember this?

not only do they like to climb rock... they love to throw rocks off the top at climbers trying to climb below them. One day I was hiking up to Eagle Wall in Ton Sai Thailand and was immediately turned back by monkeys hurling rocks off the top of the cliff. Good times. The best I ever saw though was in Khao Sok National Park. The monkeys were climbing the cliffs and jumping off into the resevoir below. They were like little kids! It was so damn funny to watch you can't even begin to imagine.

You guys want a real challenge: put on some gloves, come up here to Alaska, and try to catch one of our dinky little squirrels with your hands. Now those guys can climb and dyno better than anything I've ever seen. I've got great stories of catching squirrels. As for monkeys, my guess is that they climb. The recent black diamond rock gear catalogue has a pic of a bunch of lemurs climbing rock on the inside of the back cover. Very cool, and it looks like they climb fairly well.

What's real interesting is that apposition of the fingers with the thumb is an attribute that we humans have that apes don't. I wonder if the same applies to monkeys in general, and if so, it's absolutely amazing that without their ability to grip the way we do, they can still climb incredibly well.

Although monkeys are quite short they have a much greater ape index (the ratio of his arm length to height, an advantage in climbing)than that of humans.

Monkey's are just climbing machines. What else do they have to do? 24-7 fun on the trees and rocks. What a life.

Okay, I just woke up and got to thinking, wait a moment, I have a search engine!!! So I went onto Google and searched on "Monkeys+Rock+Climb" and came up with this funny link: http://www.multcolib.org/webcamp/00/session3/lighthouse/koby.html Quite frankly, I could probably do better with Adobe Photoshop Deluxe though.

If u could fornicate like a wild monkey 24/7 would u bother rock climbing?? I think not........For this reason and this reason alone monkeys(the shizlinist of all shizlin animals) and rabits will never climb a rock, unless their pad happens to be on the cliff...inwhich case they would just jump up it because monkeys are gods.......i'll shut up b4 i say something else stupid

We were monkeying around using a winch (a monkey winch) on the other side of the rope with a Grigri. Had to anchor my Explorer onto a giant redwood so it wouldn't flip over. I showed Magila how to keep his arms extended (to spare the biceps). Then he began to hand jam these cracks (see photo). Monkey see, monkey do.

When my uncaffeinated brain received that picture this morning, it let pass all other glaring discrepancies and only after 10 minutes of foggy-headed oggling did it registered the thought, "Hey, that chimp knows how to place pro? I'd hate to be his second, I bet it runs out placements all the time. Would I trust an ape to belay me, much less set up an anchor? Wait, wait, this is all wrong..." Some days, I don't drink coffee just to see how surreal my mornings can be.
