Anybody know anything about the cause or possible access issues? Just caught a news article about it, but they just mentioned a "possible equipment malfunction" and mentioned a rope breakage. Though they also said "no break point in the rope could be pinpointed."
I'm pretty lost as to how a rope break could result in a 100 foot fall, and then no one would be able to find the break.

I know they weren't the most accurate, but do you have a link to the local news?

Any official word on if it was webbing or the rope that failed, seem to be conflicting stories?

I was at Ravens roost this mourning talking to the park rangers who were conducting the investigation of the fall. Apparently all 3 climbers were gym climbers and it was there first time climbing outdoors. The webbing was the point of failure but they said it had not been broken, which leads me to deduct that someone tied a knot incorrectly. As far as access goes, the roost is closed to climbing until the investigation is over.

My sincere condolences to all of his family and friends.
Way to many accidents this year already folks. Be careful out there. Check and double check your systems. Use clear and concise communications that you've talked about before leaving the deck, walk off when possible.
Have fun, but stack the deck the best you can in your favor.

@Magua: If you are able to keep up with the investigation, please update the topic with details about what happened. You said that webbing was tied, as if there are not anchors there? We do not know any such details, but would like to understand as much as possible.

Raven's Roost is an easily accessible rock band, below an overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's very popular with recreational 'rappellers' and TR climbers. The nature of the rock makes it a little less popular for trad. There are currently no bolted routes, nor bolt anchors. Most folks climb where they can sling the rare tree, sling boulders, or build anchors.
The climbers involved had apparently anchored to a prominent (very "scenic") tree where tourons often pose for pics. It's a common anchor and is showing quite a bit of wear an tear.
The initial reports are not very clear, but it *sounds* like it was a single sling anchor, and somehow (!) it became UNTIED :-o
I contacted the lead ranger and was told the results of the investigation would be made public.
