I believe that the explanation is simpler than that. This is an image from a lightning testing station. They fire rockets that trail a thin copper wire up into a thunder storm and this is the result.

Does it make me a bad person if I can think of a half dozen or more posters who I would like to see up there on the platform with a full set of golf clubs?
