I think the ratio between hip size and leg sizes is different. And the rise is higher in women. Bigger hips usually compared to waist.
I doubt most people would notice the difference. Why not try and find out?

The leg loops are a litter wider for the size and the rise is just barely higher. I use a women's harness (it was £20 cheaper then the mens) without any issues. I'm sure it goes the other way, too.

K, the judge said 5 posts. You have to stay 5 posts away from me. That is one post. Do I need to call the Mounties to come and explain this to you again?

Just wondering what the differences are between mens and womens harnesses. I have a BD momentum AL harness (mens) that I may use to take my girlfriend out and toprope to try climbing.

Thanks

As others have said, women's harnesses usually have smaller waist than men's harness in the same size.

But harnesses are adjustable to a range of sizes within limit, and people come in different sizes and shapes. I am sure there are plenty of women out there climbing in men's or unisex harnesses. And there are plenty of people who have their first taste of climbing in gym or guide-provided rental harnesses that may not fit optimally, but do just fine.

Bottom line -- have your gf try the harness on. If it fits her reasonably well (the waist belt is tight enough not to slide down over her hips, the leg loops are not uncomfortably binding) she would be O.K. to wear that harness to try climbing. After all, you are not going to be doing multipitch with hanging belays, and she won't be dogging a project and taking lead falls for hours at a time, right? In that case, even an uncomfortable harness will somewhat less than optimal fit is not that big a deal. I have rigged harnesses out of webbing for people who just wanted to try climbing. They have not complained about it being too uncomfortable...

something between 4-12 inches long is the main difference

Thanks for the replies everyone. I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience firsthand, before we drove a couple hours to find out ourselves.
Thanks
