The best gear is the gear that does not kill you.
For an absolute beginner: go with comfy and cheap. Try stuff out (especially shoes) before buying them. Dont buy too small.

Read THIS

All major brands of climbing shoes and harnesses are more than adequate for beginners. Go with a fit and lower price, if more than one item fits well.

Go into a climbing store and test out different harnesses and see whats the most comfortable..... Petzl have the most comfy I have found..

And as for shoes.. just don't get something too aggressive to start off with and you'll be fine :)

Like others have said, go cheap! Now matter how much research you do it is likely that you will buy everything over again so don't worry about getting it right the first time.

As far as shoes go, comfortably tight is what you want. The key word is Comfortable, NOT tight. Do not get a supper aggressive shoe. Again buy cheap, as a beginner you will have very poor footwork which means you will wear out your shoes quickly.

Have fun
Eric

don't listen to them go buy the most expensive coolest stuff than sell it on eBay for 5 bucks after the fad wears off......just kidding.

Trying it on is good advice but after that buy what you like if its because of the color or the manufacture logo. Who cares but you its YOUR gear.

I started with a Black Diamond Momentum harness. Like everyone said, cheap and comfortable is what you want.
Welcome to the sport! Happy climbing!

I dunno. I think that's a pretty low standard.

It is a low standard, but still the minimum requirement to qualify for greatest gear...

(parachord, keychain biners, other "innovations", an atc or gri gri or harness or rope or whatever in the wrong hands all do not qualify for "greatest gear")

cheers,
