Im thinking about picking one up but I want to know if it works pretty much on the same principle or the grigri. If it does, thats awesome, and say if I use it when Im indoors, will it lock off like the grigri so you can do stuff on the wall? and can you rapp with it and how well? thanks chase

The SRC locks automatically, but not as solidly as the grigri. If you want to use it on a wall, I suggest you wrap the rope around your leg a couple of times. It's great for out on the rock, though, because it's a more dynamic belay than the grigri, and much lighter. It's also easier to feed rope with. For rappelling, it works better than the grigri, but that's not saying much, it's still not very smooth or convenient. A.W.

The only problem I have found is that it does not lock off completely on static or otherwise stiff ropes. It still provides friction, but does not lock completely off. I would say it is great for a poor sport climber who can't afford a Grigri or does not want to carry an extra pound.

its pretty good, make sure the biner you use has a round profile, not the more usual oval profile. it wont work as well without the right biner cheaper/lighter and just as good as the grigri

I have never used one it seems to be just like a reverso but for only one rope. A reverso can be used with two ropes at the same time. If this is the case then i would go with the reverso because of the versatility.

It's actually quite different than the reverso. A reverso is only in "locking" mode while belaying the second directly off the anchor, it's not locking when you belay from the ground (leading or TRing). Just wanted to prevent any confusion. To answer the original question. The SRC is the same CONCEPT as the Grigri, but utilizes a different PRINCIPLE. I've used one before and you could safely consider it a less expensive alternative to the Grigri. I still prefer the Grigri over it, but as always...try before you buy. The statement about using the right type of carabiner is also true, but you shouldn't have to worry too much since it comes (or at least used to) with the proper type biner (large locking pear made from round rod stock).
