You should use an autoblock backup but if you dont do this you could tie off simply by wraping the rope around your thigh a few times or you could use a mule knot.

I think you will need to see a picture, but everybody should know the mule knot and the munter hitch for that matter. A bunch of those intro to climbing books show you these knots--John Long's for instance.

I always put two x knots in the taols of my line, an x knot would be, generally speaking, the backup knot when you tie in

Everyone should use an autoblock and wear a helmet, but few do.

Best way to tie off on rappel is with a bubba hitch. Take a bight of rope on the "downhill" side, and tie a clovehitch with it around the "uphill" strand(s). Clip the end of the bight off. This is much easier to tie and release than a mule knot, and does not require threading the rope through the locking carabiner, which risks losing control of the rope. It is also an excellent "soft" knot for most applications where a mule would be used. Check it out!

I also use an autoblock, but when I want to stop to take a pic or whatever I just wrap the rope around my upper leg a few times.

Brutus, You forgot to mention bringing the bight through the biner, unless the knot your refering to is plain wrong. the tail of the rope must be going down from the device, otherwise you have no control of the rope when you untie. bring the bight throught the biner, then tie a clove around the standing end. Or wrap around leg, that's what I do most of the time for quick stops.

You could always try useing a rescue figure 8(fig. 8 but with ears). Then just wrap the rope around the 8 a couple of times but be sure you start the wrap by going under the rope coming into the 8. that is how i do rescues Tim
