Hello all,

Looking for info on children-friendly crags in the NE USA. We are from Northern NJ so anything between a few hours’ drive will work (NJ, CT, EAST PA and NY). Both sport and trad (and bouldering) would be ok. Kids are 4 yrs. old and 8 weeks old. The 4yrs. love to climb.
So far we have been to Allamuchy, the Gunks and Haycock.

Help. Frown

Thanks,

P.

You've hit one of the best... the Gunks. There are quite a few different areas which are suitable for kids.

The Trapps obviously has a nice approach trail (carriage road), there are a couple spots early on the Brat, Uberfall, Jackie/RMC.
If the 4yo is a good hiker, then you should have no problem getting to somewhere like Lost City which has a nice amphitheater area and also the bonus of being across the street from SplitRock.
Bonticou crags are quite nice as well, lots of boulders to explore, but the approach is a bit more challenging.
Minnewaska is also great, there are a lot of moderate options in Peterskill and not so much worry about rockfall as in the Trapps.

Personal Opinion below...
If you haven't purchased a kids climbing specific helmet, would recommend a bike helmet be worn at all times when at the base of any crag. This often necessitates that the adults do the same (lead by example).
