Hi, I'm going to travel trough Canada next spring / summer, starting from Montreal, around 5th April to the end of August, (flight back from Vancouver). On my journey I would like to climb as much as i can in many different places, maybe going up to Alaska as well... Does anyone will be around as well?! Any suggestions is welcome! Mara

Hi Mara, How are you planning to travel? That will definitely affect where you can get as far as climbing. Are you just looking to climb, or to do other stuff along the way? Most of the best climbing in Canada is in the west -- where we actually have mountains. Between Montreal and Calgary (Alberta) the land is most rolling, with some climbing in the more eastern bits, but none across the prairies. In more detail: Around Montreal: decent cragging Across Ontario: some decent cragging, some decent local climbing. Across Manitoba: basically flat Across Sasketchewan: basically flat Across Alberta: basically flat east; moutains west. Lots of climbing in the mountains west of Calgary, and over through Vancouver. Across British Columbia: lots of climbing, too. World class climbing near Vancouver, at Squamish. Getting up to Alaska, if done by driving, adds a lot more distance to your trip. Montreal to Vancouver is probably around 5000 km, adding to/from Alaska would add another 2000 (or so) to the trip. Also, April is early season for climbing in the east (Montreal area, Ontario). If the weather is good, the climbing can be good. The next two months: May & June are black fly & mosquito season in eastern & northern Canada. That means lots of biting insects in the out of doors. The weather may be ok for climbing -- but the bugs aren't good. We still climb, but it isn't as nice. (Insect repellent, but netting, etc.) Myself, I'm in Ottawa (about 200 kms west of Montreal), and would be happy to show you around some local climbing in my area for a day or two if you're interested, and things work out. Also, for various areas, you may want to look for more local boards -- rockclimbing.com isn't very active any more.

For Squamish, BC area: http://squamishclimbing.com/ For climbing in Ontario: ontarioclimbing.com I'm not familiar with other local boards.

You're welcome. Also, Montreal & Ottawa overlap a fair bit in the crags we climb at. So if you don't have Montreal-based people to climb with, we might be able to meet up at some of the crags, if you can get yourself there.
