My thing is that i can get 30 ft of slings for the same cost as a 4 foot sown runner. Thats 7.5 feet to every 1 foot of sown, HA! didn't know i could do math did ya! . Can they realy help out that much.
I see that the inconvience of a knot being in the way is gone. But i'm not realy into trad, yet, so would getting some of these be a waist right now for me. Why or why not?

Like most things in climbing...I think you need to take the middle road...some of each; the tied for bailing off of some long epic, and the sewn (preferably 11/16") because they're sooo nice.

You can walk to work cheaper than you can drive.
I prefer driving.
Seriously though. I use both. The sewn are good for convenience. The tied are good for mixing it up in creative trad or TR situations. Plus, sewn are a lot easier to leave behind when you have to.

well it's just like ropes...you dont lead on static and its not good to have to cut your slings to tie around a tree....its good to just have the correct item for what the situation requires...they both work...sewn slings carry nicer around the neck an shoulder so you always have them with you

Most climbing gear seems overpriced. But while you might pay $60 or more for a cam, a sewn runner is a lot cheaper than that. I used to have some sewn nylon, but I don't get those any more. I get Spectra which are noticably different than nylon.
But if the bulk of tied runners doesn't bother you, then you are fine.

If you aren't into trad, why bother being concerned.. ? go buy some quickdraws and be done with it.
If you want to get into trad, get the sewn slings, they are less to worry about. Unless you are a cheeeeeap a.s like I am.. I tied my own for a while and still have/use them. My friend the gym/sport climber makes fun of them.. ohwell, it worked for folks far better than I...
make sure if you DO tie them yourself that the tails are long enough and that you inspect the knots frequently because they DO get loose and will sneak themselves open.

Slings are so cheap anyway, for a lot of people the price diffential is kind of inconsequential, so then it's just convenience.
Also, you cannot buy unsewn spectra lengths as it is too slippery to knot.
