Just to test out the new PM killfile feature, I just killfiled beyond_gravity. While my choice of this user as my test subject was not entirely random, I do not really want to killfile him. I assumed, that I would get a confirmation screen, or something. I didn't, and he's gone...gone forever. . How do I bring him back? We need two features: one, a confirmation screen when you click on the killfile icon, and, two, an unkillfile feature, so that if you later change your mind, you can revive the dead. -Jay [ This Message was edited by: jt512 on 2003-01-16 19:46 ]

I'll get around to implementing unKillFiles Real Soon Now... but for the moment I'm kind of happy about the sharpness of the tools :-)

Ok, killfiles are now reversible by popular demand. But, owing to the fact that I am 1) lazy and 2) hasty, you don't get back any PM's that you deleted. I mean, it is called a KILL file, not a DiscourageFile or seomthing. nb. I whacked a lot of youse's killfile lines because I had used the wrong datatype for the damn OffendingUserKey in production. Oh well. Just whack them again next time you get a PM from them.

Tim, I don't get it. How do I unkillfile Beyond_Gravity, the user I inadvertantly killfiled? -Jay

So, I guess that we need some kind of link to our killfile lists, either from our profile or from our PM screen. Edit: ok, I see you've put an icon on the PM screen that links to our killfile page. Now, you just need to explain what the icon is! Tim, sorry, but this should have been implemented all at once, not piecemeal. -Jay [ This Message was edited by: jt512 on 2003-01-16 20:54 ]

ya, we need a kill count in our profiles for everyone to see just how many people we have whacked.

How do you know if someone has killfiled you?

1) you don't know if someone has killfiled you at this point. MySQL is too weak to do a SELECT UserKey FROM User WHERE UserID IN (SELECT OffendingUserID FROM KillFile WHERE UserID='$cUserName') but I'm sure Eric will be along presently to explain how referential integrity, subselects, and other post-1970 inventions are really just useless cruft and besides, who would want to reject PMs at the source... In other words right now killfiles are just a destination filter, they don't prevent a PM from being sent, just from being seen. 2) I added a 'manage killfile' link to the Edit Profile page. Also, the skull at the top of the PMs page links to the page. If given no arguments it will default to presenting a list of killfile entries (if any) and a link to remove them individually.

Back in the day when I was the main programmer around here, I could implement stuff and no one would notice for days. Now tim does one minor thing and we 200 posts on it at 11 PM at night! This site amazes even me! I guess it's kind of like trying to repair or widen a highway that never shuts down.

Oh, gads. Now I KNOW I used to do QA for a living, because I just had a moment where I considered killfiling myself just to see what happened. Not that I send myself private messages..... Kate
