I have no reason (right now) to use the killfile, but it's a nice option. I've used it on other sites, when there are users who offer nothing of value to a conversation - ever.

Insert into KillFile.UserId
( SELECT Users.UserId
FROM Users, UserKillFile
WHERE
Users.UserId = UserKillFile.UserId
AND
KilledUserId = 'passthepitonspete'
)
WHERE KillFile.UserId ='valygrl'

Ahhh, there goes the longwinded drivel!

QUESTION for TIM

Is it the same file for the forums and the PM's or is it two separate killfiles?

Thanks,
Anna

As you can see by your personal "killfile", it list those killed and type, with the option to remove any... So I think it's together.

Adam, I haven't added anyone to my file, so I didn't see that.

I'm just beeing a SQL Geek, anyway.

Understood... I don't know SQL, so I guess I didn't "get it".

No subselects or transactions allowed -- remember, we're still mired in the murk of mysql. (retch) No foreign keys either...

Would you be up for a Needles gathering sometime this summer (like, oh, 4th of July-ish)? The thought just bounced into my head after seeing Zac in JTree and threatening to drag ArtM up there...

BTW, if you want to play around with killfile features, just whack someone. It's only temporary, it doesn't affect them, and it merely masks their presence. If you want to read their stuff afterall, just remove them. I changed the code that originally whacked PMs from killfiled users, so now the action it literally impact-free; it has the effect of changing your view of the site, but no impact whatsoever on the underlying content.

There's one table with 3 indices and an enumerated type ('PM','Forum') that would be better modeled as a foreign key, but again, we're using a stone age database here. Doh.

NB. since it's a many-to-many table, you'd probably want to be inserting the results of that subselect into OffendingUserID (and (SELECT U.UserKey from User U, Killfile K where U.UserID = K.OffendingUserID) for the OffendingUserKey -- did I mention that MySQL lacks foreign key support, by chance? -- to tie everything to the forums). Ahh, nested subselects. I can only dream of a database that incorporates post-1970 features...

( A lie -- I've set up postgresql 7.3.1 and we're already migrating parts of the site )

Can't do Needles July 4th as I will be climbing the Nose right around then...

I'll PM you about other possibilities.

Nah, it's Latin. That language doesn't resemble anything close to what is used in this millennium. I feel for ya, Tim.

why are people upset with this feature? If you don't like it, you don't have to use it? Personally, I have already killfiled quite a few people who have never posted anything worth my time to read. Thanks, Tim!

First week of August is when a few of us traditionally head out to the Needles. Too hot for most anywhere else. We should pick this up at the regional forum.

Ceate a thread in the Events if we want to make an RC.com gig out of it, or West Coast Partners for a smaller get-together.

Either way, it's all about Mike and I this summer in the Needles.

Damn you, Adam - now I'm going to definitely chalk up that Yosemite trip in August..

Mutter, and I thought if I ignored it, I might save the money and not go.

Why the hell would you go to Tahoe when you can turn left onto 395 and hit the Needles?

Wait, wait. Nevermind. The Needles sucks! STAY FAR AWAY it's all choss!

Squamish though, I'll drink to that. I have to make it up there. Met some Swedish climbing bums in the Valley once (gave them a lift after bumbling around on Higher Cathedral, I think) and they had:

  • Flown to Vancouver
  • bought a van amongst the 6 of them
  • climbed at Squish for 2 weeks
  • drove south and climbed in the Cascades
  • climbed at Smith for 2 weeks
  • hit Calaveras Dome (I think)
  • stayed in the Valley for 2-3 weeks,

and were heading down to the NEedles and eventually Baja, then selling the van and flying back to resume their jobs.

I need to move to a socialist welfare state.

np. about the killfile.

I almost moved to Vancouver in 2000, when I had a job on offer from a biotech startup. Unfortunately they weren't able to hold things together so I didn't sign on... probably for the best, but I was really looking forward to bc skiing in the Coast range and climbing the Grand Wall. Oh well.

Vancouver is a lovely city. (although their ice is pretty crappy compared to the stuff you guys get up in Quebec)

tim,

the west coast ice, is about 50 times better then anything they have on the east coast.

some of the longest ice routes in canada are actually in b.c.

p.s. your killfile thing is dumb

rrrrright... that's why La Pomme D'Or (East), and Replicant (central/Banff) are the ticks, rather than Carlsberg Column or Synchronicity.

If you're talking about pure length I can name several routes in the Sierra that are longer than any of the above, and you know damn well that the Sierra is not exactly an ice paradise. Your jab is misleading.

Nice troll, by the way.

Sounds like a worthwhile experiment. It doesn't stop anyone from posting, but it gives each reader more choice about which posters aren't worth reading (and the satisfaction of *plonking* as needed). Who knows, maybe it will improve overall content. If not, at least it will seem to.

I like the bold line between replies when killing a user, so you can tell that it's working at editing out the replies from them. Makes for reading pleasure.

Yes, Canada has more taxs then American.

And Alberta isn't Central. It's not even close.

BC and AB have WAY better ice climbing then eastern Canada, no question about it. There are so many high quality routes within 2 hours of the highway.
