I am about to buy the Metolius XXL crash pad. Looking for reviews or suggestions. Specifically its portability, is it? Any one with user beta would be most appreciated.

Thanks All,

Bob

I'm a trad climber that is prone to injury. I have the XXL and when I boulder I LOVE IT. You'll never feel safer. There is no better pad on the market for sheer protection! Don't expect to carry anything else with that sucker, but it in and of itself isn't as bad as some make it out to be. I backpack once in a while, so a few hundred yards with a 15-16lb pad isn't much.
If you don't really need the protection, get something smaller (the XL) but for highballs and bad landing that thing is the $#!&

Dude it's big. My wife surprised me with one for christmas and that was my first thought. I think it feels ok, but being rather wintery up here I haven't really had it out yet. The shoulder straps aren't massive so they could dig some on longer approches. It's tall on the back too, so it might make bushwacking a little difficult. I'm excited for it and can't wait for the snow to clear to really get out on it. Oh it is great to sleep on though. I hope this helps some.

Edit:
Madriver, I just saw you have a young daughter that's too small to belay. Chances are then she will never miss this pad when she falls. That's the reason my wife picked it for me. I think you'd be very happy with it.

Tanks for da info all! "T" you got it. She'll be the one using it , I'll be the one shlepin' it around. Sounds like a great pad..but a real pig. I'll go for the safety factor and whine about the pig on those long hikes latter! Hopefully will be up at Rumney again this year.

It's not that much of a pig. Besides, you can't really carry much else while you are packing it which leaves your wife to carry the pack.
