i was at my buddies house today buildering on his chimney. its got like inlaid stone all the way up to about 40 ft or so. i climbed up to about 30ft but didnt have the testicular fortitude to finish it out, even though im sure i could have. i just wasnt sure how far i could fall without getting hurt. we were dropping onto a cordless bouldering pad and i fell when my feet were about 20 ft above the ground and was fine, but i just didnt have the balls to go higher. how far have u guys fallen from without getting hurt?

Falling from 20 feet? Why not downclimb? 14-15 feet bouldering is my longest to answer your question.

what I would really like to know is how many times someone on this board has made a "how far was your longest whipper/fall/jump/suicide attempt .. ." post. eric [ This Message was edited by: aireq on 2003-02-02 18:29 ]

[body bgcolor="green"] ive take a few 20-25 foot falls, on all of these i was fine but on a 15 footer i sprained my ankle real bad. i believe it si the landing that you have to worry about not so much the height. [/body]

Took a fall from about 35-40 feet up, landed on a log and crushed two vertebrae in my back. Talk about a long rehab...

I once fell from the top of a 30 ft route to 2 feet above the deck landing on top of some thorn bushes and my belayer, I was lucky I didnīt get killed, but since people are recounting stories about injuries I think mine donīt qualify too much, I was scared to lead for about 2 months later!

On a route, took a 60 footer but stayed off the ground. Took another 25 footer upside down, again stayed off the ground. Took a 40 footer into the ground and on my back, but walked away from it (actually went back up and finished the route later that day). Bouldering I've taken a 20 footer when a heel hook blew and my spotter caught me (no crash pad). With a crashpad this last weekend I took a few 15 footers but only the last one bruised my heel (only used single crashpads, once we start doubling up, what's next - a stuntpad?).

I'd say the biggest I've taken is probably only about 8 to 10'. Man, I've got to get out more.

There is a sick bolder problem here in Central Texas where teh last move is an all points off dyno to a jug at 24 feet. When you snatch the jug, you kinda get horizontal for a second... way up there. WAYYYYYYYYYyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy up there. I have taken that fall a couple of times.

Yeah, there was this sick problem we were working on down in Bama. Highballin, took a 60 footer, landed flat on my back, bounced up to the 12th move, grabbed hold of a jug and took a dump in my pants, then fell back to the ground and ripped a branker. It was sick, man.

Longest falls were both on Trad... 40 footer on a Yellow Alien on Castleton Tower. 40+ footer on a #9 in Mt Lemmon. Numerous smaller falls, on both Trad and Sport.

I've fallen 20 feet on an overhand and missed the ground by about 6 inches My worst fall though was finals route in a climbing comp. It traversed up to the left. I had slack out to clicp and fell 4 feet past the last one. all in all I did a 12 foot pendulum accross the face I was climbing and hit a perpendicular wall with my side.....really who would make it like that????????????/

i thunk u are all missing the point... this is a BOULDERING forum, so i assume we are talking FREE FALLS, as in, whippers dont count. well, maybe if you deck b/c of a bad belay... what is the difference between bouldering and leading with a really bad belayer... but hopefully nobody is THAT bad... anyway in dont really have any good stories... the best i have is about 15' one a stack of gym pads... but don't worry, i'll get out to the gunks this spring, and i will try my best to show no concern for my own health  mike

Please tell me how you didn't know you were going to get hurt? I fell about 30 feet while rappeling. Seemed like less, but that's about what it was. No harm done.
