Do an independent study and build it yourself for a grade!

Go out, get some grant money to pay for materials.

o-rec at my university is currently trying to petition for the funds for a climbing wall -- i'm wondering myself where we have space. that aside, i'd check other schools who have had walls and see how they went about doing it, what buttered up the administration enough to help fund such a project. student interest is a must, and any kind of funding, of course, would help. it often takes crazy organization and a lot of pushing in order to get a wall up ....

some students at my school have unsuccessfully tried in the past, but this new effort might prove successful! good luck to you

First thing will be to convince your school that there is sufficient interest to make it worth building a wall.

You then have to secure funding, this could be through the school, or through private donations. Either way you have to present the entire project to the school in a very professional manner. Where to place the wall is another question. My school placed it in one of the squash courts, converting it into a small climbing gym.

Other things to consider when presenting your idea to the administration is future funding, and staffing of the wall.

Good luck!

When my school wanted a climbing wall they convinced the school that the racquet ball courts where under utilized and that they should build one in there, that way all they needed to do was to fund the wall and no build on an addition to make the space

First, there has to be an instructor.[he/she will be persuasive]
Then, there has to be many ppl[find] that like climbing and that they will convince the deans etc...that they will use the wall.
Then make a statement, and collect signatures from the guys that want to be build the wall...and with little luck...!You will have a wall!
We did that to the college i'm going,we have a wall and now we want to make bigger the wall,so we take the same tactic again[collect].

We actually did do this a while back at Wollongong uni (australia). First we made a club (there are lots of clubs - all funded by the uni), then we converted one of the 6 squash courts into a bouldering room. Was great fun!!! But now we have an entirely new centre and no room for climbing

We recently had a new wall built at Dalhousie, in Halifax, NS. It's in a squash court and I guess that they will take up another court if this wall is popular enough.

It might be best to talk to people who have gone through this already, and find out how they went about it. Nick Sagar and Heather Reynolds and the two who manage the gym, unfortunally I have no contacts for them.

At my University in S. Florida, USA, we have an outdoor climbing wall and bouldering cave that is part of a larger ROPES course. This has different activities and companies pay the university money to come in and do the activities as a team building exercise. There has been a climbing club for a year now, and we use the wall every other week or so.
Perhaps if it was profitable you University would build it.

We had a climbing wall in an old racquetball court stuck out of the way in a recreation facility. It never got much use or notice except from a small group of climbers. Last summer and fall the school built a new fitness center and included a large new wall and a chimney. Since it opened at the beginning of the semester hundreds of people have climbed at the new facility, many for the first time including myself. the old wall was redone and is now used as a bouldering wall.

"If you build it, they will come." Chris Duffy is in charge of the walls here. You can email him at CDuffy@towson.edu. He might be able to help
