This happened just before Xmas 2001. Loretan was alone at home, wounded on a shoulder, while his wife was guiding someone on a north face. Loretan, who had been much involved in foundations dedicated to children, was worried because his wife was late from teh alpine ascent. The baby couldn't sleep while Mrs Loretan said the baby usually fell better asleep with his father. So, Loretan, upset both by the cries and his wife's delay, shook his baby. He later reaslised he was breathing with difficulty so provided the emergency care and called the ambulance. But the baby died the day after at the hospital. The sentence is light. Maybe because of Loretan's involvment in children care and because the daeth was an accident (a very stupid one). Very sad story for one of the best alpinist and himalayist of the time...

I hate to be offtopic, but we seem to be playing forum tennis here. Pick one (Community or General, I don't care) and stick with it! Anyway, did you know that if you accidentally kill someone here in the states, you can still get tried for involuntary manslaughter? That is to say, if you do something so stupid it kills someone, they take you off the streets because you're an unwitting hazard. I seem to remember being told somewhere to not shake babies, as you might kill them. I guess this "common knowledge" was not so common after all.

it depends on how the system decides who gets the death penalty. i think there are some people who should not be alowed to live. jail is for correction, there are some who cannot be changed.

how strange it is to see that many of you are ready to kill this man, and that in Switzerland this guy is free. Huge gap between Europe and the USA... But who doubted? this topic should be moved back to community forum

or just close it, it's not really interesting anyway. rc.com is not People magazine... Or move it to injuries forum so people will learn that shaking a baby is dangerous!
