more geologic trivia - the quartzite at NRP & Seneca is the Tuscarora sandstone of Silurian age - approximately 430 million years old. The T. sandstone is a prominant ridge former throughout the entire Appallacian Mnts. The quartzite at NRP and Seneca differs from the quartzite at the Gunks in that it is harder due to low grade metamorphosism - which is also part of the reason why (along with the help of a large fault) the bedding planes of Tuscaroro sandstone are oriented vertical versus the Gunks which are still horizontal. These metamorphic stresses also account for the jointing and faulting throughout the Tuscaroro sandstone. If you recall there are numerous places at Seneca where the rock is polished and slippery - rthese are mini faults. Sorry for the lecture - but being a geologist I can't help but spout off this stuff.

I collect fossils. If I make it there, you can't take me home for your fossil collection though.

My guess why there's two fins at nelson - there used to be a river in between.

give the man a free beer!..yes faulting is the answer..very interesting. i was near the end of some ramble about 2 different depositional environments and differentail erosion to answer your question then i lost my ramblings it after my pc went off line......good thing it was pure BS i disagree with you claim that the tuscarora quartzite does not have any fossils....i've seen trace fossils at the lower slabs. they are horizontal feeding borrows --arthrophycus alleghenyensis. have you ever heard of this?

yea the ones i've seen kind of look like a bunch of tubular overlapping worms... what you are seeing is the bottom of the feeding borrows that were filled sediment, then fossilized and turned upside-down. they are casts of the original feeding tubes. hopefully you can understand this, it is hard to explain on paper

Wow! That design on the first page is super cool. Is it possible that T-shirts or stickers could be made of that? The proceeds could either go to defray the cost of the gathering, help out NRP, or even be donated back to rc.com. I would totally buy one if you made those into a shirt...

Overhung, As far as I know you have to cross private property to get to it or take a long back way through the hell hole area to get to it.

Ooze, Did you know that you have to be a member of wvclimbing.com to view those pics?, even when they are in an rc.com thread? Alex

i agree w/ christa about that design it'd make a good shirt but to the outsider they'd think you were part of some cult or something. okay w/me esp. if the proceeds go to nrp, rc.com, or the general costs of the gathering... great pics of champe.. anyone wanna go in halves on a gyro copter, or what?
