Check the advice from the 1972 Chouinard catalog.

The rest of the catalog is interesting too.

I have never nailed a route, but heres how I understand it. The hammers that are used have a pounding surface on one side of the head and a prying end on the other side that also has a hole which would be looped with a length of cable, with a biner of some sort on the end of the cable. Think hammering away from the rock. Oh, and those of you who use these things, correct me if I am wrong.

Just give em a tap tap tap down and the same back up! you will get it moving one way or another. Clip something in to it and you to make sure when it does come out you still have it for the next pitch... Use a old crab to clean with because it wont work like it used to when you are done cleaning a few sections. AID On

You hit them back and forth. It's best to hit them up-up-up, and then down a little bit. This keeps the placement more usable for later. The taper of the pin causes it to become loose and fall out. By hitting it up more than down, you wear the rock out favorably (sic).

A funkness device is a piece of steel cable with a loop at each end. You put a beater crab onto the pin, and another onto your hammer, and link them with the funkness. When you swing out, the shock load on the pin will tend to pull it out. You usually do this after tapping the pin back and forth a bit first.

If the pin has been driven behind an expando flake, you need another method: take a thicker piton and drive the tip in next to the pin you want to take out. This will expand the flake, and you can take the pin out. The thicker piton will then come out rather easily, because you only drove the tip in to expand the expando.

If the pin has been driven deep into a pin scar hole, or into a Perfect Pin Placement, it's almost impossible to get it out. It won't have any room to move up and down. You'll have to shatter much rock to get it to move. This is what the Expertists call a Fixed Pin. Leave it there.
