Wow! You can't believe how shocked I was to see my name on the front page (without it being a joke, eh Mark ).
Thank you all so much!!!
I did work very hard on it, the drawings alone were a huge step forward in home computing for me, and I could not have done them if not for the support of Jules and Bob/bshaftoe.
Adam, as far as the comments and votes go I don't know if I can do anything about that, it seems as if Nate has the final word on articles around here, even before they a written.
And I so would have welcomed your votes and comments, but it looks like Jody has solved that problem too!
Best of luck to those of you who build one I can't wait to see the pictures of yours!!!

Steve,
I am embarassed to admit I haven't used it on any walls yet.
I just finished it a few months ago. I carried it around a bit on aborted attempts to solo a little wall... but that is another story.
Soon I hope to have the aid bug back, and perhaps a partner to climb with when I am ready to. Maybe then it will get used for something other then a "sleeping porch" when it's too hot to sleep inside, or a toy for my nephew to play on (with the fly on it does make a cool yellow fort).

That is a great ledge! The PVC pipe weighs a bit less (per foot) than the steel tubing that Fish uses for his ledges.
For what it's worth, I have found some pultruded fiberglass tubing that weighs even less than the PVC. I'm going to use it for a new frame for my own homemade portaledge that has (barely) survived two El Cap walls. I'll probably have to machine some aluminum blocks for the ends, but NBD. When I finish, I'll do an article like Krusty's.

I can vouch for the quality of the Krustyledge. I was able to invite myself to the Krustykasa and see it with my very own eyes. Being a sucker for any good home-made gear, when I heard Jeff had built his own ledge, I asked if i could stop by and see it! I have made a lot of my own gear, and his ledge is certainly strong enough to take the abuse a wall will dish out!
Use this resource my frugal friends!!

Long past usefullness on my part, but truancy seems to be a gift for me.
Have you any designs for a fly? If not, I have an idea...
I'll have to build and test the ledge before I start on that though. Luckily, I can enlist my mother (or at least her tools: industrial sewing machine, hot knife, general sewing skills that have built more than a few bomber coats) for help. El Cap, here I come (someday).

Krusty told me that he was able to score a fly for a BD single (I think...), and he designed his ledge to fit the fly, rather than the other way around...
It could certainly be done, but your measurements will have to be precise, and your attachment system should be bomber...

Ok. Varying ideas I've come up with to prevent wicking, although I'm still kind of shaky about the attachment itself (clip the ledge to a runner, which is attached to a runner attached to the fly, and that same runner is clipped to the anchor). Can't say that I can justify around $300 to cover a $100 ledge. That's encouraging if the ledge size isn't set in stone though. I'm already 6 foot tall, and I don't like the idea of varying parts of me hanging over the abyss.

Haha Mick that is a great one! Krustykasa  I may have to make a sign for the driveway!
The answer to petsfeds problem is easy, and Mick is the winner. I did use a manufactured fly but it's a North Face/A5 (purchased from a member of this site for $80 plus shipping).
I have tried to replace/copy the fly on a tent before (borrowed tent, long story) and it wasn't easy. Seam sealing the thing like the factory is impossible, I don't have a radio frequency welder, I doubt your mom does either.
When I made my ledge I wanted it be the widest it could be since my requirements are exactly the oppsite of yours...
I am short and claustrafobic, so I wanted the fly to be as open/wide as it could be if I were ever to need it, and to be able to sprawl on it comfortably especially while belay/napping (my Gri-Gri hypnotizes me to sleep  ).
Petsfed, or any of you tall guys, need to just do the opposite of what I did you want the ledge to be 7 feet long... make it 7 feet long, you'll just have to make it narrower than mine (mine is the widest single anyone makes, just shy of the skinniest double). Plus the manufactured flys are plenty big enough to make it over a ledge that's alot bigger than the one they're made for.
I may be selling my fly soon, but if you can't swing the price of a used fly the Good Dr. has already covered the making of the cheapest goodest homemade fly I have ever seen , heck I have used it to hold the middle of a tarp in camp up so it didn't fill with rain. YESSSIR! And All has gone well.
Got all PVC, primer, and cement for just under $20 (friend is a distributor)
Tommorrow I drop the frame off at the sail loft where I will sacrifice an older jib for the fabric, There is no way I can stitch like those guys.
And now I am gathering the webbing and buckles.

Hey Jeff,
I just came across your portaledge article. I'm amazed that I just now came across it. How did I not see it before?
Anyway, I just wanted to commend you not only on the actual ledge (you already know my thoughts on that) but also on the killer write up for it too.
Great job. I'm sure a few folks on here will benefit from your hard work.
See man, I wasn't just blowing smoke when I told you that your ledge KICKS ASS!!! As you can see, I'm not the only one who thinks you did a fantastic job.
