In reply to: ...don't feel like climbing... what?! i've only felt that way when i was regularly meeting a whiney partner early mornings in a gym - so i can sorta relate. either, a) get outside (are there crags in Kansas?) or b) maybe supplement with another sport? if it ain't fun for ya, do something that blows your hair back instead.

I get my motivation by just looking at my calloused hands and contemplating dousing them with some girly cream..... Scary thought.....sends me running to climb.

Baldguy- That's the problem, there are no crags in KS! We're inside all of the time and which doesn't motivate me sometimes! Real Rock motivates me but at the present time moving is out of the option! I still love to climb!!!

Never had that problem before . . . I always wanted to go climbing. Half the time I had to tell myself not to go so my hands would heal.

Yeah, usually it's harder to pull myself away, than to get motivated.... however... I always push myself further and harder when I'm either training for a comp. or competing in a comp. There's an adrenhalin thing. I also get more excited and motivated in a new environment... I think the people you climb with also motivate you... My climbing bud group is exceptional... We all keep pushing and striving to get the best out of ourselves and each other. Sometimes all it takes is someone to have faith in your ability to make you realise that you can actually do it! :D

my biggest problem with plastic is that it kills your desire. go climbing with an enthusiastic beginner and pick up on their enthusiasm(girls can help) remember that your training for climbing more than actually climbing go work out at a regular gym and it makes a rock gym look a lot better

Seeing climbers that are worse than I am, and telling myself that I need to continue to get better. That or they are going to pass me up and I'm going to look Sucky!! that's good motivation. But the ocassional cute girl climber is a most definite plus!! :D Tim

i am generally stuck bouldering in the gym along like 90% of the time because it is most conveneint for me to go early (like when the gym first opens) so only on weekends is there a good chance of seeing people i know. and even when there are other people there, it is unlikely we will be in a position to work stuff together (alas, i am not as burly as my sick climbing bros...). so my motivation really has to come from within most of the time. it is rare indeed for anyone to ever really "cheer me on"if u know what i mean... anyway, one unfortunate source of motivation is the desire to prove all the people who think of me as weak wrong; to get really strong and then surprise them all one day. this self-centered, egotistical view has obvious disadvantages... another (hopefully more prominent source...) is my desire to send cool problems. the setter at our gym puts all his attention into the hard stuff, so most of the really memorable stuff is the hardest stuff set, and those of us who can't pull that hard are left with more mediocre (but still quite good IMO) problems to pull on. many a time i have sat there drooling (not literally) over this sweet, funky problem he just set, knowing i am not strong enough to do a single move... when in doubt, loud techno and/or rap does the trick.

I'm with Duracelbunny!! The only thing that slows me is bad pain or exhaustion. Even then it's only cause I'm afraid I'd have to climb less if I kept going. But in all seriousness--If i'm really needing motivation to climb, I just park by a mall or a Mac's for fifteen minutes and watch the people going in and out and in and out. Better yet, I turn on cablevision... (Doesn't 'shock'smiley look like s/he just got a splinter in the hiney??) O happy day -p
