Looking for suggestions for a 2 week climbing trip at christmas (international preferred but U.S. would be okay too, other then J-Tree and Red Rocks). My dream is Thailand but I have not been able to find a flight for under $1200 from Minneapolis. If anyone has ideas or suggestions on making this more affordable, it would be greatly appreciated. So other then Thailand, where would be a good climbing location? Things I'm looking for are a flight or transportation costs under $800, avaliability of camping or cheap lodging, prefer multi-pitch but sport will do, and culture and spanish speaking are pluses.

It's near Monterey Mexico. Do a route search for more info. Big wall sport routes and plenty of 1 pitch stuff abound on limestone cliffs.

potrero 15 pitch 5.9's (to loose for me but many people like them) A hundred 5 star 5.12- Three years ago you could get a bedroom in a house for $5 a night Fly into monterey and take a cab to hidalgo (the rancheros can set you with one) No need for a car once your there The nicest people I have met in mexico. Do a google search for potrero chico Homeros is the original and closest to the crag la posada is where I stayed. depends on what kind of accomodations your looking for. Don't stay at el rancho gordo.

In reply to: Yes... Potrero Chico Another vote for Potrero. I would say Australia, but it will be summer and likely damn hot (not to mention as expensive, if not more than Thailand)

I've been to the Portrero twice, and though it is a worthy destination, it is way overhyped. Quality climbing, don't get me wrong... but definitely not deserving of "world-class" status as some people (Kurt Smith circa 2000) would like you to believe. If you are willing to spend $800, then you should really reconsider Thailand. There really is no comparison between Railai and El Portrero. If you put a little more effort into your airfare search you can probably score something around that price range. Admittedly, it might be a bit harder for Christmas, but we bought Bangkok tickets for a February trip last year, three weeks before the flight, for $790 from China Airlines. C.A. partners with United or Delta, so the fare was the same from any city in the U.S. Just look around some more, especially look into Asian carriers.

Thanks everyone for the tip on Portrero Chico. I heard of it before but didn't really look much into it before. Any other suggestions for trad climbing areas?

potrero's great for sport multipitch... but it is really really reeeeeally crowded over the christmas holidays. i mean, reeeally crowded. do you want to climb multipitch under a few other parties in the choss pile that potrero is? see if you can find a place to go where you won't have to line up for climbs. unless you enjoy crowds, that is.

If the potrero is to crowded for you, consider El Salto, 45 min out of monterey, no commercialization at all. The routes use to start at 11d, but it is the best limestone I have climbed on in north america. As far as other winter destination consider Hueco tanks/crowded One of my favorite trad climbing areas is Cochise Stronghold, can be cold over x-mas but it can be fine to. Has some of the most beautiful rock there is outside of the needles.

You could go to Europe and climb in Spain. Siurana is supposed to be outstanding limestone. Also, winter is the season for bouldering at Font outside Paris. It's the off season so you should be able to get a ticket for under $600 or $700, maybe less.

Thanks for all the tips. It sounds like portrero is really crowded but if I did decide on heading there, what would be the cheapest and fastest way to get there? I read from past from a past forum that you can either fly directly into Monterrey (looks about $600 from Minneapolis during x-mas) or take a bus across the border($360 to San Antonio then bus it). Any thoughts or hints on this?
