This is something everyone i know is pretty lazy about, putting back up on there rappel rig, (not backing up what there rapping off of) so i just thought ide throw this out and get a quick idea how prevelant the laziness is. Please respond in short form ..."i do" "I dont" if you do please give a the name for the type of backup you use  edit; reading the responses reminded me of something else i do that i wish everyone would do lower the rope dont throw it ESPECIALLY if there is lose rock the rope can take with it, but even just to avoid the tree or my head THANKS edit by Tim: hey man, this is a great question. I added an actual poll for you, PM me if you would rather take it down. hope you don't mind!

single pitch: no, unless there is a drop off below (one comes to mind...) multipitch: always, autoblock attached to leg loop. and, I always tie a knot in the end of my ropes. always. there's been more than one person in recent times who has died here at Red Rocks on a short rappel, so its something that's always on the mind....

I never have but if it came to some really scary sh!t like rapping at night, with it raining sideways, snowing upwards, and rockfall all around, then I might. But even with a pig, the most I would do is to use 2 rap methods (ATC spidered out to pig and biner break on harness) for the added friction. But for multipitch rapping, I just tie knots in the end and be careful always. If I ever did do it, I would use the autoblock on the breakhand side of the rope attached to the leg loop. Only has to hold a fraction of the weight and easy to unload since it isn't loaded much at all. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

if I am moving fast over easy terrain, no. If I know I need my hands free, on multipitch, or when in unfamiliar areas or during weird weather yes. I do a quick and easy kleimheist below the rap device, and clip it to the leg loop of my harness. Works well, fast, and quick and easy 'third hand' for when I want to take a photo, scope out a new line, etc.

I should, but rarely do on single pitch, biners can fail! I always do on multipitch. Prussik on my leg loop.

Recently, all the time on both single and multipitich since I found out how easy the autoblock is to use compared to the prussik.

Never have other than knots sometimes. I always pay attention to the rope ends. I know that that would not save me if a rock knocks me out on rappel though.

I do always, unless there is someone below me to hold the brake line. Method of choice: Autoblock with 9/16" webbing on brake side.
