You probably wonder why I am hammering on the Magaliesberg issue, well that is where I started my climbing adventures and still go to most often to get away; and I thought since it is only about 40km away from the dam I may as well post the topic here... Just to inform the foreign climbers : this is a set gorges located in great quality quartzite, only about 100km to the west of Pretoria, SA. Before descending into the gorges the vegetation is grassy with plenty of bush and small trees. Once inside the sometimes very narrow(5m in some places) and very deep(60m-100m)gorges, it is like being lost in an amazing forgotten rainforest. Being surrounded by spectacular rock walls on either side, feeling and hearing the soft splashes of untouched water dripping down the roots and branches of hundreds of trees-both on the black furtile topsoil and suspended above one's head, as if climbing the rock walls itself-,when listening to the crystal clear water rumbling at one's feet, one cannot but feel humble again... Has any South Africans been doing some serious climbing here that I should know about as a climber who is interested about the future of this climbing mecca? I would love to hear what you guys/gals think about the area and its relevance in the climbing world. Rock on... [ This Message was edited by: pwsk on 2002-02-06 07:55 ]
