i'm heading up there for the weekend. Might go for a strole up Mt. Hunter Saturday Afternoon.
anyone interested in tagging along? My flight arrives at 11:30, I hope to be at the base at about 1:00

Dude! There's no way you can get from the airport to Mt. Hunter in 2 1/2 hours!! This is Alaska. It's big. Are you bringing a picnic lunch?

Since it's not April 1st. , I'm assuming you are joking.
Once I heard of a hitch hiker who got off the ferry on the Southeast Alaska Island that I live on. He was hitching a ride north and told the driver it was his intention to hitch hike all the way to Anchorage. (750 miles by air away) I wonder what he thought when he got to the end of our 30 mile long road. Hope he was prepared for a long swim. :lol:

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this. I was up on Foraker, taking a break and getting away from it all for a few hours. Saw a few cute little marmots at the summit, and fed them bits of my clif bar, cause it was too soft from the sun beating down on it for me to bother.
But of course, if this is at all serious Jeremy, you could make the Alaska Rock Gym from the airport by 1:00. :D Or the Seward Highway, but I wouldn't recommend that over a nice gym, unless it's been a whole winter without climbing. :lol:
I'll be out in Palmer at a housewarming Saturday, I think

Seriously though, the Seward Highway climbing only sounds good to me after a long winter of the gym. At the moment, after a long summer of Hatchers, I'd rather grab some friends and hit the gym. :twisted:

seward highway schizt can be alot more fun than hatcher's granite. the schizt has so much texture, there are so many ways to do certain problems without sacrificing their difficulty. In hatchers, you have to follow obvious routes and can't stray too far off-route in many cases. Granite is so much less receptive to searching fingers, and much less receptive to pro in lots of places. That and almost all the bolts in Hatcher's are getting old and sketchy.
Not to rag on hatcher's, I did a fair bit of climbing up there this summer too, but if you are shooting for single-pitch sport, the seward highway is (in my experience) the finer of the two. Certainly will always kick every gyms ass up and down. No question. But I guess if you want to spend all winter climbing in a gym instead of rock (on the highway the snow quickly winds up windburned off of the rock) more for me! Good luck with all that....

seriously though, I recommend after the winter hits us really good, wait until there is a lull in the snow...or better yet wait for a chinook. those can make the highway quite warm, and though it can be a rockfall hazard, its fun to climb there when the wind is high (I was on sunshine ridge a few days back when the winds got up somewhere above 100mph). If you hit it in the right conditions, it can be pretty damn cool in the winter.
Not to mention the sweet ice climbing on the highway. You do any of that? Fun times
