http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=12948 I have a couple more from this shot, I will post them as variations sometime later this weekend. People loved it, mostly because of the beach theme. I have problems with the uneven horizon, how I missed that. There are some nylon bags and stuff on the ground, not much visible but strill disturbing. The girls silhouette might be better if it was a little more to the right not to overlap the background sunning girls... Any comments? edited: yet another spelling disability

I think this shot would be better if there were only the climber in the frame. The bags, the spotter, the girl on the rock, the girl silouette just take away from the climbing on the beach. The contrast between the Bright Sea / sky and the climbers silouette is really good, and that should be the foucs of the image. It would be nice if the horizon was level aswell.

I`d like to suggest that this perfectly reflects the usual beach scene. Usually when one goes to the beach there are lots of people around doing there thing, happily going about there business of relaxation. So this juxtaposition of working a serious roof boulder problem and having people in the background with nary a care in the world is what is tripping my buttons. Yeah the plastic bags on the ground are a bit annoying. The tilted horizon is disconcerting for a fleeting moment but quickly becomes a non issue due to all the activity (or lack thereof) in the photo sweeping ones eyes and thoughts into the moment. I have no problem with the silhouetted girl standing in front of the girl sunning herself on the rock, after all when one goes to the beach there are usually far more people standing, sitting and generally laying about and you can`t wait for everyone to line up so that everyone is not obscuring anyone else. This pic displays some great beach activities, now if there was a surfer coming out of a tube in the background and a sail away off in the distance ahhh, I`ve gotta head back down the coast.

The crowds are one of the things I dislike about the beach. If I go to a beach, I pick one where there's no one else in sight. Going to the beach is pretty rare here in Alaska though. ;) In Hawaii we found a 3-mile stretch of empty sand with a sandstone cave at one end. Perfect. I need to go back and get a better pic though, now that I know how. :( http://www.rockclimbing.com/photos.php?Action=Show&PhotoID=11557 I don't like the other people in the pic. The shadow person isn't too bad, but the girl in the background is way distracting. My eyes went straight to her, and it took a while before I found the climber. I suspect that this is because I'm a guy, though. If I were you, I would have blacked out all that clutter in the shadows. The stuff on the ground kinda detracts from the pic for me. Check out this pic of mine: http://www.rockclimbing.com/photos.php?Action=Show&PhotoID=13283 Originally it had a highway faintly visible along the edge of the ocean. It sucked. I erased the highway and it made it a whole lot better. That said, that is definately an awesome job! Way better than my pic above. I love the color of the ocean, and the way the subjects are completely blacked out against the blue. Very sweet!

All good suggestions. Mel I think if I was attmpting this shot (IMHO) I would focus and meter on the water. (you've already touched on the horizon ;) ) Keep the water in focus and take in all that wonderful blue! The sillouette (sp?) will take care of itself at that point. The girl is red needs to be seen. The person in front of her can stay but the two need to be seperated. It think this would give it depth. An alternate method would be remove everything and keep Red there ;) There is a lot of distracting stuff there, and it's more distracting because they are paritally visible too. You subconsiously want to know what they are because you can see some of them. This can be a nice technique to use, but with the sillouette (sp?) it's distracting. Use those colours to your adavantage!

Melekzek: I dont find the girls in the background annoying. I find them much more interesting to look at than the climbers! Now, if they were engaged in the subject, say, sitting around watching or spotting, that would be more interesting. Yes, it reflects your typical day bouldering beachside, but thats not what you want, right? You want to show something extraordinary.

hey, i love your photos! the people in the background just add to the beach atmosphere i think... getting back to your question.. i preferred the second of both sets of pics.. although the rocky, sandy ground is interesting.. it detracts from the climber, which should be the primary focus.. but overall i love your pics! they're awesome
