Is there any climbing, Gym or Outside, in the New Orleans area? I will be there for a conference in April and am hoping to climb. Josh

Sorry Josh - no rock within 5 hours. You ought to over-train at Rumney then come down and drink yourself healthy. That seems to be our state sport. There is one decent gym - www.first-ascent.net but nothing near the Quarter. You'll have fun - it's a great town to visit. Jeff

Jeff ditto... i lived in baton rouge for six months while on a photojournalism internship... loved the culture, hated the geography... nothing to climb but buildings and trees... but it's an excellent place to eat(!), drink(!!) and be merry... -brad

Climb Max and First Ascent are two gyms in New Orleans. Call information for phone numbers. The closest rock is about 6 hours away (in Alabama). :) Bryan

The closest rock is about 6 hours away (in Alabama). :) Bryan I have been to Climb Max a couple of times. Unfortunately, as of late, the quality was really lacking. I hope that they have done something since October 2002 but I doubt it. It seemed as if the gym was really hurting. The ropes were old and some questionable. They have the knots already tied in for you and you just clip in. No requirement for double locking biners or anything like that. I would have preferred to have tied myself in but this was the way the gym was run. Everyone belays on Gri-Gri's(provided). Just watch your step in that gym - make sure you trust the rope and the other equipment. I was very disappointed - however - BOULDERING wouldn't be so bad in the place. :) It isn't a climbers paradise but it is a workout instead of buildering. Peace, JD

In reply to: I have been to Climb Max a couple of times. Unfortunately, as of late, the quality was really lacking. I should have offered a disclaimer :) I currently live in Little Rock and used to live in New Orleans. So it has been a few years since I have gone to Climb Max. But I did go to First Ascent this past July when I was home for the holiday.
In reply to: They have the knots already tied in for you and you just clip in. Is this not standard practice in many gyms? I'll admit I've only been to three gyms in my lifetime but all three did things the same way with respect to "tieing in". They all had a locker that was clipped to a Fig-8 and you clipped in with that.
In reply to: No requirement for double locking biners or anything like that. Why would there ever be double locking beaners? There comes a point in time where you can have too much redundancy. No one has double lockers on their quickdraws.
In reply to: It isn't a climbers paradise but it is a workout instead of buildering. Welcome to the climbing scene in New Orleans. :) My buddy lives there and drives out of state twice a month to climb. He has an Xterra thats about 1.5 years old and it has > 50k miles on it ;) ut...since you mention buildering...I've heard that some of the old buildings on Tulanes campus are fun to mess around on provided the campus police don't catch you. I went to Climb Max and second bsignorelli's beta on that. I used to live 2 blocks from Audubon Park. The huge old live oak trees there are great for climbing, and there's hundreds of them. It's in the University Section, across the street from Tulane and Loyola. Plus, great people watching on the paved track that circles the park.

In reply to: How far are both gyms from the NO city limits. Within public transportation? ClimbMax is on Canal Blvd and is within the New Orleans city limits. First Ascent is out in Harahan? and is closer to Kenner and the air port. Public transportation (bus) can get you from the Quarter to the other end of Canal Street (called the Cemetaries) and from there its a short walk to ClimbMax. There may even be another bus that takes you the last few blocks down City Park Ave and Canal Blvd. First Ascent is probably a taxi trip 'cause I don't think there are bus lines that run very near there. But I may be wrong on this. Bryan
