This week I'll be attempting my annual birthday challenge in order to raise money for climbing access (and cancer research but I'm here for the FOJT, as it's the underdog.) Due to some recent issues we've had at Josh, I've chosen The Friend's Of Joshua Tree as my target. To read more go to: http://www.birthdaychallenge.com/steve/madness.htm And how do I plan to earn this money? Through suffering, of course. I've concocted a real doozy--a challenge even my closest friends don't think I can complete. Check it out at: http://www.birthdaychallenge.com/steve/Steve2003.htm If you'd take a sec to forward this on to anyone that you think would be interested in helping, it would be much appreciated. Cheers, Steve 22 athletic events over 43 hours ending midnight on Nov 22nd Raise $4,300 for The Concern Foundation Raise $4,300 for The Friends Of Joshua Tree Plus, I'll double all contributions myself if anyone can keep up with me during my entire challenge Climb 43 sport climbing routes (3 out of 4 must be 5.10 or harder) Lift 43 tons in the gym (86,000lbs) 430 pull-ups/bar dips or hanging straight-leg raises 430 push-ups 430 crunches 430 leg lifts 430 jumping jacks Mountain bike 43 kilometers (26.6 miles) Road bike 43 miles Run 4.3 miles (in under 34 minutes) Hike 4.3 kilometers 3.4 times (8 miles) Surf 2 hours 43 minute (catch at least 4 X 3 waves) Hold breath 2 minutes and 43 seconds Paddle 4.3 miles in a kayak 43-point game of 2 on 2 beach volleyball 43 yoga poses for 43 seconds Throw 43 strikes (from regulation 60’6”) Make 43 free throws shooting better than 75% (3/4) Throw 43 rocks for Tuco 43 games of roshambo (winning 4 to 3 losses) Juggle 3 balls for 40 seconds 43 X 43-second massages for support team Plus... "YIKES. Maybe cut out a few things and get back to reality....." - Bob Banks "Studly' you are, but "Superman" you're not! ...looking forward to the after party though" - Jeff Brown "The Minister has spoken! Yes I know Birthday Challenge is not Birthday Pretty Hard, but neither is it Birthday Suicide." - Brian Edwards (yes, my brother) "All of that?! Ha, Ha, Ha--no way--Ha, Ha..." - Andrea Pesce "I agree that they don't call it "Birthday Pretty Hard" but there's definitely an optimum goal which is (in my opinion) about 10% more than you can actually do..." - Phil Requist "All of this is but a distraction leading up to the obvious main event. Any other act of physical endurance is child's play next to a plate of 4.3 Kingpin fritters." - Matthew Johnson Will commit 43 random acts of kindness Hand out 43 dog treats to dogs other than Tuco Make a list of 43 movies that every person should see and give it to 43 friends Entertain those 43 friends at Manny’s El Matador Where I will: Eat 4.3 Kingpin apple fritters Drink 4.3 cocktails Drink 4.3 beers Pass Out (Optional) "I dunno gang, we are talking about Stainless here (cue: theme music to film 'Shaft'.....). I did 40 routes in 8 hours without too much difficulty on my bc challenge. He'll float it in 6, with enough support. Travel time looks to be in two chunks, one for climbing/cycling/running and one for watersports. So give up five hours of travel, and he's still got 6 to rest. My money is on the challenger." - Kenji Haroutunian ===================== "People say the we're searching for the meaning of life. I don't think that's it at all. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive." - Joseph Campbell Live Your Life www.birthdaychallenge.com (310) 980-4870

you are one dedicated man. I heard about your b-day challenge doing ___# of problems(cant remember) at Pine Mountain, Lizards' mouth, and Brickyard I believe, and a run from pine mtn. to sespe gorge. I figured I'd try just the run. I did it, but there is abslutely no way I could do it AND all those boulder problems, as I was on the verge of puking the last 1-2 miles. I give you props. Many.

I am humbled by this challenge. If I wasn't already on a philanthropic work weekend trip I would love to help out. If it falls through I will check in. Much luck and kudos. miker

That was 290 boulder problems followed by a 29K run, and it was Bob Banks, not me, though I did a lot of it with him. I should mention that he also smoked and drank a combo 29 beers and cigs (15 beers/14 cigs), which I assure you didn't make the run any easier. I did, however, do 400 boulder problems one day during one of my challenges. Endurance bouldering is an underrated sport. My toes hurt for 3 months after that one.

Is that Mike Reddig? Hey, how'd your challenge go this year? Last year's is still on the site but last I heard about this year was when you were deciding between Tahquitz and Josh. What's the scoop?

bumping this, in the name of self-promotion. actually, it's to raise money for josh. if you climb there it's a no brainer. the friend's of josh doesn't profit one penny from their work. it's all in the name of altruism. they are a proper .org, so you can write it off. and since many people don't think i'll make it, how about putting up some money based on me finishing only. that'll keep me sufferin' when the chips are down. cheers, steve

Just an update to Steve's challenge. I met up with him at 6:30 am. He had already done half the yoga poses, ran the 4.3 miles, and done the breath holding. We then ran over to the park and I caught his 43 strikes (in about 120 pitches, little wild) and he got through the free throws. He was off to climb a dozen routes and I had to get to work at 8. He's looking strong but has a ways to go!!!! THink good thoughts, if you can, he'll be climbing at Echo CLiffs on Saturday, so if you're out there. Give him a hand, let him hop on your rope, and give 'em some encouragement. CH

Here's a new BD Challenge update. Jacqi Florine may be the first woman to solo The Nose, but that is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, compared to what she's trying on her birthday! http://www.birthdaychallenge.com/index2.html

Well, this last addition is not a trip report yet. Oh, but it will be. Just a question of who's going to be writing it...
