In reply to: WHO CARES?!?! hehe sorry... it isn't how many pullups you can do that matters, but on how bad of holds can you pull yourself up? i agree with that 99,5%

thirty on a good day, if i've been training. probably less than twenty today, however... i had a buddy i worked with long ago, a marine (he's a pilot now, with his name aside a cobra, probably on mission #2 to iraq as i type this...) who i witnessed throwing down forty seven (that's 47, kids) pullups, getting air off the bar each one. militant. useless post, btw. i've found that the number of pullups i can do has an inverse relationship to my onsight capability. i do best hung over, fat after a long winter, not yet taken a crap, with the sun in my eyes.

how many can you do? If I can do ten does that make me more than average, maybe even super? No. There is no such thing as an "average" man, in my opinion; just those that can, and those that can't. And for those that are going to respond with "keep your opinions to yourself", I say, " this site is based on opinions so go eat my a**" BTW, who did the article? One........please. From a statistical stand point, where did they get one? Did they take the average # of pull-ups an "average" man can do? If they did, then some would have had to do a negative number of pull-ups. Or is one a mode figure? Now isn't that interesting.............no.

What type of pull up are you talking about? This will make a huge difference in how many pull ups you can do. There are two basic types, palms facing out and palms facing in. Palms out are far harder than palms in. Then there is also if you're doing wide grip or narrow grip. Then there is technique. You are suppose to stop for one second at the bottom of each pull up, and you are not suppose to swing your lower body. So yes the average man can only do 1 pull up, palms facing out, hands just wider than the shoulders, and no swinging the lower body. I can do 5-7 pull ups in this fashion, 12-16 with my palms facing in.

When I first started out climbing (1992) I could do a few sets of 20, and hang by one arm (never got the one arm pullup). I was also stuck to slabs, due to my girly-girl finger strength. My pullup count has steadily gone down since, with a slow, clean six being the norm, while I can boulder infinitely better now, having pumped up the #2 forearms a bit. I'd still like to do a one arm pullup, for the hell of it. It looks cool.

On a good day I've done 25, palms facing away. The trick, though, is to train doing all kinds of offset pull ups. Use a hanging board and put one hand over the top and use fingertips for the other. Experiment with different positions because it more accurately represents the types of positions you will find yourself in when climbing.

In reply to: I usually do 3 sets of 15 with a 45lb plate strapped to my waist, 3 times a week (2 sets wide and 1 set close), but like some others have noted I still can't climb very well, 5.9-10 at best. Sounds like you have the arm strength, maybe it's time to get a hangboard and do finger pullups for finger strength.

and what about pullups on 1/3 inch wide crimps (with no warmup, after a god meal and 2 expresso, on top of your room door frame)? Just 2 for me, but I'm sure at one time I was up to 5 or 6. Just my 2 €cents in this thread.

I don't know. I haven't tried to do a pullup in at least 5 years, probably more. You folks don't, like, pretend they are actually good for something, do you? With my old elbows, nothing good could come from pullups. DMT

Forget pullups... just climb... Pullups is boring! At least when you climb you have fun... Want to get stronger? Climb long roofs or climb with a weight belt... e_wire
